Lactose Intolerant

So I found out my sister was Lactose intolerant today. I knew her first born was from an early age but I didn't know she was. I mentioned this to my Dad tonight and he blankly said as he walked by....."Yeah, we all are".

Now I know why I have been getting sick when Jeff buys me Starbucks Mochas (which is about the only thing I like from those fancy coffee shops) and why sometimes i get stomach cramps when I have even a single bowel of cereal....usual I will have two...ok and sometimes three. I drank milk a great deal growing up and never had a problem untill the last two years and really bad this last year.

I thought Lactose Intolerant meant that you could die from milk. No....just feel like you gonna.

Well at least now I know......yet another food item I cannot have or at least should cut waaaaaay down on. (gotta have my icecream....screw the cramps)

Lactose intolerance
Classification and external resources

Lactose (disaccharide of β-D-galactose & β-D-glucose) is normally split by lactase.ICD-10E73.ICD-9271.3OMIM223100 150220DiseasesDB7238MedlinePlus000276eMedicinemed/3429 ped/1270MeSHD007787Lactose intolerance is the inability to metabolize lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products, because the required enzyme lactase is absent in the intestinal system or its availability is lowered. Some people also mention pasteurized dairy products as a cause (raw milk contains small amounts of lactase). It is estimated that 75% of adults show some decrease in lactase activity during adulthood worldwide. The frequency of decreased lactase activity ranges from nearly 5% in northern Europe to more than 90% in some Asian and African countries [1]

Took me a while too.

I don't drink much milk, haven't for years, but occasionally I'd get a hankering for cereal. For a while I chalked it up to coincidence, having cramps and well I won't go into any graphic detail.

Now I just avoid larger volumes of milk all together, even icecream I have to limit the portion I eat.

Sucks getting old.

Maybe it's just me, but if I were you I would stay away from bowels of cereal for a while and see how it goes first.

Because, for many decades,
i get many of the studies that I must
peruse in periodical form ,
I don't have the link for this one.

A study was done that proved that
"lactose intolerant" has much more to do with
what you eat with milk.

Nothing - really - digests alone.

That is why that glycemic index is useless and why the 'pro-biotics' are so good for digestion.

You might try having your cereal with milk AND bananas.
Bananas have an enzyme that breaks down some things.

You may try pourable yogurt instead of milk.

(Also: Soy milk gives the same problems to some people.)

For your over-all thinking, bear this in mind:
we have more bacteria cells in and
on our bodies than we have human cells

and
more different types of bacteria cells than we have
different types of humans cells.

Once you understand this, it is easy to understand that
you may have picked up new bacteria in your digestive track over time - good or bad.
This can be confused with aging.
It is not 'aging'.
It is 'accumulation" and
"time for suitable division to allow for significant multiplication".

I would be in a world of hurt if I couldn't drink milk since i live on it.
