That would motovate some desperately needed change

Strange that the U.S. running out of oil back in the 70s didn't "motovate" some change.

Don't blame it on the SUV.

I drive a 70K miles+ mid-size SUV 22 City/26 Highway. I got it when the odometer had 7 miles on it.

I wanted the hybrid version, but it wasn't available then. I'm actually glad the sales person pushed me into the 4 banger 5 years ago, because a friend of mine just got rid of the same year Prius (a smaller car) due to the need to replace the battery which costs $$$.

I'm wondering about the disposal of these lithium batteries. Fuck hybrid.

My next car should be a diesel with bio-diesel capability.

The oil supply peaked long before the advent of the SUV (though SUVs do come in for a blasting in McQuaig's treatise).

Actually i think that'll ease the transition. You'll see businesses do what private home owners do now... go "off the grid" and generate their own power.

Like how? I'll call the city ASAP, if my neighbor is firing up a diesel generator.

Wind? Not enough around my hood.

Solar? Try to power my dryers? No chance.

Do the math, it ain't possible.

Lemme see here..What would $200 per bbl of oil break down to at the pumps?..If $98 per bbl translates to approx $3.20 per gallon at the pump, then how does $5-6.00 per gal sound at $200 per bbl?..I just paid $3.12 per gal for home heating fuel, and the bill was a little over $400..Double that

How motovated are you now?

Gasoline was .75 cents per gal during gas crisis in the 70's..and I recall that not being a big deal..What was a big deal was waiting in the long lines

BTW..Do you bring this point up because it has some validity..or just to be a wise ass?

Nope. It was predicted by an expert in the field 25 years before that U.S. gas supplies were going to peak in the 1970s and he was right. The U.S. has been looking for outside sources ever since. Maybe you should do some reading on the subject instead of just inventing things that serve your own agenda.

Quote:
In the past 14 decades, we've used up roughly half of all the oil that the planet has to offer. No, we're not about to run out of oil. But long before the oil runs out, it reaches its production peak. After that, extracting the remaining oil becomes considerably more difficult and expensive.

This notion that oil production has a "peak" was first conceived in 1956 by geophysicist M. King Hubbert. He predicted that U.S. oil production would peak about 1970 - a notion that was scoffed at at the time. As it turned out, Hubbert was dead on; U.S. oil production peaked in 1970, and has been declining ever since. Hubbert's once-radical notion is now generally accepted.

For the world as a whole, the peak is fast approaching. Colin Campbell, one of the world's leading geologists, estimates the world's peak will come as soon as 2005 - next year. "There is only so much crude oil in the world," Campbell said in a telephone interview from his home in Ireland, "and the industry has found about 90 per cent of it."

Industry, business and government have been using scare tactics

& lies forever to shape public mindset and behaviours.

Here's a bit about Hubble & big oil from Greg Palast:
