they are taking away bonuses from these soldiers and last week we heard 25% of homeless people are veterans, seems to me that money could get a down payment on a home..

but this is the sort of issue that everyone can agree on. (well, almost everyone)

Then I suggest you run down to your ARMY recruiter ASAP - get the quick-sign up bonus, get an accelerated basic and advanced infantry training package (half-ass training), give the bonus $$$ to your wife and kids struggling to make a rent payment, get deployed to Iraq, save lives, kill a few insurgents, watch your buddies die and get maimed... in short - give it your all and then a few months into the gig - BAM... an IED tears into your Bradley, rips your arm off, burns your hips and nuts off, and use of your left leg is 90% gone...

Then go thru the ARMY hospital scene for months... then get sent home to enjoy the VA system... and get a measly $1,500.00 monthly check. Meanwhile, your wife leaves you because you traded alcohol for the impotent pain pills... and you get stuck with her taking your whole check. You go to the VA for help and they tell you to come back next month to see a counselor that does not exist due to the overbooking...

So you go to skid row, and then your ex-wife says The ARMY wants that bonus money back - at least 65% of it.

So - you seem to know how well the system works brother... when are you enlisting? Will you send us postcards a year later when you're on the street? Give it a rest until you have a context of what you are spewing... And BTW - the bonus is taxed at about 40% and you don't see a dime until you complete training and get assigned to a unit

You seem to have skipped the part about loading myself up with insurance using that 60% after tax bonus. That bonus means, wife and kid get nada, if I come home safely in one piece.

Yes, the $1500+whatever my disability insurance pays for that blown off nut. I'll make sure to get the kind of coverage that's enough to fit me a few errr exotic prosthesis and pays for my own private counseling.

What's even better is the $$$ my wife and kid will get if I die for my country.

It's all good.

What's not good? I'm too old, and at the trade-off point where it's actually a break even for the risk and benefit. Some might call it the mid life crisis.
