'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

Title
'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7112929.stm
-----------------------------------------------------
Excerpt

A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

------------------------------------------------------
Comment:

She may receive six months in jail or 40 lashes for letting a bunch of young children name a teddy bear Muhammad. A fucking teddy bear! She didn't even choose the name; the kids chose the name. This is insanity.

I suppose there wouldn't be any issues had they named it Jesus.

To a certain extent, I agree. She's guilty of naïveté.

Then she might have been prosecuted for trying to convert the kids to Christianity.

Why were these kids in a classroom naming a Teddy Bear in the first place? They are there for education, not naming stuffed animals. The teacher should be fired. Reminds me of the "70's" when teachers sat around playing their guitars singing instead of teaching. And they have the nerve to wonder why Western societies are behind the Asian countries.

The teddy bear belonged to one of the student, apparently. These are 6 and 7-year-olds... First graders, basically. I'm sure it was just a spontaneous activity, not part of the curriculum. It looks like it was intended to be a sort of classroom mascot, and the children were given creative writing assignments related to it.

Teaching 6 and 7-year-olds requires a bit of imagination. The teacher's mistake was having imagination in a country run by a brutal theocracy.

The bottom line is, this bitch is stupid.

It's like some dipshit foreigner comes to U.S. and burns our flag in front of a group of minuteman.

or

Talks about death penalty in front of Europeans who abolished them long time ago.

or

the combination is infinite.

Someone can call us the same on everything you deem others as barbaric or primitive.

No. Better is not better in many cases.

No, it's not.

First, the flag is a governmental symbol.

Second, flag burning is legal in the US and does not invoke a criminal penalty.

That's not a match, either. Democratic societies generally allow for freedom of speech.

I'm not sure what you mean there but, either way, so far, you haven't cited a viable comparison.
