Let's try this as a way to handle new immigrants.

Those that come here legally should get help learning english, get drivers licenses of a different color than given to citizens.

Those who are here illegally are entitled to licenses why? Why should they be entitled to anything?

This is America, and the bottom line is, no doubt, money. Who gains by these people having drivers licenses and who loses.

This is a flaw in the system overall, if politicians want to make it so they can get licenses then work out an easier way for citizenship, don't circumvent the system for exceptions.
I finally found a good link to this
http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/0921071.html

I see nothing in it that gives them a different license.

I think the logic that they'll suddenly get insurance or stay at an accident scene because they have a license may flawed.

I also wonder how they determine that people who leave the scene of an accident are not licensed drivers.

I agree they should learn English but why on earth would they need a different colored drivers license than the ones citizens use? Why should they have to stand out and be different than citizens?

If they're here legally they pay taxes and do everything citizens do except they can't vote or paticipate in jury duty.

If they have exactly the same drivers license those of us who are citizens get, they will vote, and they will serve on juries.

If it helps businesses in some way to have their employees licensed to drive for insurance reasons, and those employees can drive safely, that likely benefits anyone who happens to be in an accident with that somebody.

However, while they may be legal to drive, they are NOT citizens, and their license should not tell anyone that they are.

The drivers license is key ID for many things. Let's not let it prove an illegal immigrant to be a legal citizen.

I'm confused J. Are you saying that both legal and illegal aliens should have different colored drivers licenses?

Both groups, legal and illlegal, won't be able to vote or serve on a jury even if they have the same license as citizens. I'm a legal alien and have had a drivers license since I was 16. I had a California license and then got a Colorado one when I moved here. I've never voted or served on a jury because I can't. If you can't register to vote then you can't vote. LOL, if it were that easy, believe me I would've tried to do it in the last two elections,.

Under the "motor voter" act, in NY you can register when you get your drivers license, and, IT APPEARS, under present proposal, the license will be sufficient idea to register to vote, or serve on a jury.

That is why I believe a citizen should get a different license than a non citizen. I figure this will take fewer chances.

I'd also still like to see an IN DEPTH discussion of this entire issue.

This seems crazy.

Anyone here know what motivates this?
I'm pissed off at which U.S. citizens are allowed licences.

That's cool. The Canadians are practically first cousins anyway.
