Lone Democrat at SEC leaving January 31: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The only remaining Democrat on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Annette Nazareth, notified the White House over the weekend that she should leave the agency at the end of the month, The Washington Post reported in its Tuesday edition.

Nazareth had announced her resignation months ago, but had not set a departure date. In a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush, she said "it is time for me to pursue other professional opportunities" in the private sector.

The agency will be left with three Republicans in charge -- Chairman Christopher Cox, Kathleen Casey and Paul Atkins. The SEC has been operating with four commissioners since September when Democrat Roel Campos left to join a law firm.

In November, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent the White House two recommendations to fill the agency's two Democratic seats: Elisse Walter, a senior executive vice president at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and Luis Aguilar, a partner at law firm McKenna Long & Aldridge.

However, the White House is still conducting background checks on them, according to the newspaper.

The White House, conducting background checks...THERE'S some irony for ya.

The circular file is where I imagine George Bush places Harry Reid's recommendations.
