I understand I just don't "get it." If this happened to you, we're probably there physically not to mention the emotional factor but that is not as meaningful as your parents and family. This happening to a star who's not paying attention to their already privileged life (again I am admittedly lumping them in the same boat but then I'm not wasting my time talking about one selfish individual either and am more concerned [as always] with the mental process, here being association) I'm thinking... I guess what gets me about someone like this is that they had the world at their feet and they lost it. If someone so privileged can lose everything so easily, then how much more fragile are the lives of "normal" people. I think that is part of why we make celebrities. We want an imaginary world which is not subject to mortality. Of course we can never actually have it.

I can see thinking "you stupid asshole, you had it all, and you blew it!" It is not an unreasonable reaction, especially when someone in that life is self-destructive.

I have never felt a connection with an actor or actress. I don't think I have ever had a connection with anyone who I haven't had some interaction with.

Lots of people do though. Many recognize the characters on sit-coms as their friends. (brain imaging shows the same activity when subjects are shown pictures of friends and when shown pictures of their favorite tv personalities). Unfortunately the friendship only flows one direction...kind of sad, really.

Falwell's dead, man. Hopefully that kind of hate is a bit less now.

I agree.

Sean, sounds like your reaction was basically, how did this asshole throw away his life. I think a couple of lines on a message board saying, "jeez, what a shame," is a reasonable reaction. We're not wallowing in grief, just commenting. I felt a little sad; Sean, sounds like you felt a little angry. Both seem like reasonable reactions and not out of proportion for someone we never met.
