A man attacked six people with a hockey stick, including two security guards and a pregnant woman, in a downtown Edmonton mall on Tuesday.

A 37-year-old man holding a hockey stick approached a pregnant woman inside a store at the City Centre mall at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Edmonton police said Wednesday.

The man said a few words to her and then struck her head with the stick, police allege.

The woman, believed to be unknown to the attacker, fell to the ground and was hit again. The man then began attacking several other people with the stick.

Two guards, who took him into custody, were also assaulted.

Police said the man was taken to hospital under the Mental Health Act and was charged with six counts of assault with a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon.

All six people suffered minor injuries.

The police have charged the man with icing and penalized him with 2 minutes in the box. The man was bailed out by the Canucks, who plan to use him on defense.
