Title
Clinton led in use of Link What's new: Clinton led in candidates' use of 'earmarks' - On Politics - USATODAY.com ----------------------------------------------------- Excerpt "Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure more than $340 million worth of home-state projects in last year's spending bills, placing her among the top 10 Senate recipients of what are commonly known as earmarks, according to a new study by a nonpartisan budget watchdog group. Clinton supported almost four times as much spending on earmarked projects as her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), whose $91 million total placed him in the bottom quarter of senators who seek earmarks, the study showed. Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the likely GOP presidential nominee, was one of five senators to reject earmarks entirely, part of his long-standing view that such measures prompt needless spending. ... " 'Senator Clinton is very proud to have helped New York-based projects that train nurses, improve our hospitals, help those suffering from 9/11-related health ailments, bolster our national and homeland security, and provide our brave men and women in uniform with the resources they need to achieve their mission, while keeping them safe,' said Philippe Reines, Clinton's spokesman. ... Obama's criticism of Washington's insider culture is a linchpin of his campaign; he supports earmarks only for public entities such as schools and hospitals. He secured $3.3 million in earmarks through his own sponsorship, and collected $88 million in concert with other Illinois lawmakers." • USA TODAY -- Democrats are enjoying an enthusiasm advantage so far: "In everything from voter turnout to campaign fundraising, Republicans are lagging in ways that could mean trouble in November. ... Nationwide, the Democratic vote has swamped the GOP. While 10.9 million Americans have voted in Republican primaries so far, 15.7 million -- 44% more -- have voted in Democratic ones.' • Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- Huckabee says "race isn't over:" "Mike Huckabee implored Wisconsin supporters Wednesday to defy the pundits and his Republican opponent and boost his longshot bid, which he vowed to carry all the way to the national convention. But the former Arkansas governor, at a rally in Waukesha, also said the election was about upholding the core principles of the party, not just winning. 'It seems like someone forgot to tell you this race isn't over,' Huckabee told several hundred supporters packed into the Country Springs Hotel. 'I'm awfully glad to tell you your vote still matters.' " Wisconsin's primary is next Tuesday. • The New York Times -- Clinton "caught flat-footed:" Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton "and her team showered so much money, attention and other resources on Iowa, New Hampshire and some of the 22-state nominating contests on Feb. 5 that they have been caught flat-footed -- or worse -- in the critical contests that followed, her political advisers said. She also made a strategic decision to skip several small states holding caucuses, states where Mr. Obama scored big victories, accumulating delegates and, possibly, momentum." • USA TODAY -- McCain gears up for fall; Obama aims message at lower-income voters: "Close to clinching the Republican presidential nomination, John McCain's campaign is planning to bring in new people, raise more money, and trot out new themes in anticipation of a fall race against either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton." Meanwhile, "Barack Obama set his sights here Wednesday on a group of voters who could well determine whether he or Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Democratic presidential nominee." He aimed his economic message at lower-income workers and voters who think a struggling economy is the No. 1 issue. • The Columbus Dispatch -- Clinton and Obama are "lavishing" attention on Ohio's younger voters: The Democratic contenders are giving "special attention" to voters younger than 30 because they "are expected to play a larger role in the 2008 election than any in recent memory. The phenomenon is driven by the growth of the under-30 population, (Sen. Barack) Obama's appeal to younger voters and the role of online social networking in political campaigns, experts say." Ohio's primary is March 4. • The Dallas Morning News -- Clinton "let her punches fly" in Texas: "With her presidential aspirations on the line, (Sen. Hillary Rodham). Clinton let her punches fly (Wednesday) as Mr. Obama looked toward the closing bell. 'There is a very important choice and a big difference between the candidates in this race,' Mrs. Clinton told a crowd of 2,000 in McAllen. 'I am in the solutions business. My opponent is in the promises business.' She added: 'We need answers, not questions, about what we're going to do.' " The Texas primary is March 4. • USA TODAY -- Get set for a slew of political books: "A barrage of political books, including titles from Bob Woodward and Thomas Friedman," are about to hit stores. "New authors also include former presidential press secretaries Democrat Dee Dee Myers (Why Women Should Rule the World, out Feb. 26) and Republican Scott McClellan (What Happened, May 12) as well as Douglas Feith, an architect of the war in Iraq (War and Decision, March 25)." ------------------------------------------------------ Comment: Compare earmarks for hospitals etc to museums for woodstock.. mcbush will............

It also makes you wonder, what the hell is going on with Thad Cochran and Mississippi? How does he rate all that money?
