Pakistan has test-fired a long-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads, the military says.

The Shaheen II, or Hatf VI missile with a range of 2,000km, was launched from an undisclosed location on Saturday, Major-General Athar Abbas, a military spokesman, said.

Abbas also said that "this was the second test of the missile since February last year".

Shaheen is the longest range missile that the country has produced.

Pakistan's missile arsenal includes short-range, medium and long-range missiles.

"The launch was very successful. It hit the target with complete accuracy," Abbas said.

Engineers thanked

According to a military statement, Yousaf Raza Gilani, the prime minister, watched the test of the surface-to-surface missile.

He congratulated engineers and scientists for achieving an "important milestone" in Pakistan's quest for sustaining strategic balance in South Asia.

The military cited Gilani as saying the missile and nuclear programme enjoyed complete national consensus and would continue to be consolidated and strengthened.

The statement also said that the test was conducted as part of technical improvements to verify Pakistan's land-based strategic missile systems.

'Routine test'

Nuclear-armed Pakistan and India routinely carry out missile tests despite a peace process they launched in early 2004.

The South Asian neighbours, who conducted tit-for-tat nuclear weapons tests in 1998, inform each other of missile tests in advance.

Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian foreign minister, is due to visit Pakistan next month for a review of the peace process.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, and came close to a fourth in 2002.

Why not allow people to discuss issues with you as long as they don't personally attack you? I did not say anything but my opinion. You quoted it as if to imply I said something else........... Take it any way you like..

If you or anyone takes what I say out of context for attempts to twist it or make it say something I did not intend I guess I will respond in kind....

I think we agree on most things but you seem to want to make some points or drag them out when it is merely a matter or opinion or perspective.......... Personally I don't like to argue about points I believe are meaningless......... That includes this one.........
