Man impaled by metal pole
Title
Man impaled by metal pole Link CANOE -- CNEWS - Canada: Man impaled by metal pole ----------------------------------------------------- Excerpt Investigators are not quite sure what to make of a bizarre incident involving a man who was found with his pants down, impaled by a metal stake and dangling from a tree yesterday morning behind an elementary school in North York. A parent dropping a child off at daycare called 911 after spotting the man clinging to the trunk of a small tree at the rear of Roywood Public School -- in the York Mills Rd. and Victoria Park Ave. area -- around 7:30 a.m., Toronto Police say. "Police responded and found the man on a pole beside a tree," Sgt. Roger Marchack said, explaining the man was impaled through his "rectal area" by one of the metal posts supporting the young 5-metre-tall tree at its base. SKEPTICAL "The man told officers he was robbed by two or three people and that he fled up the tree (to get away)," Marchack added. "As he was being pulled down from the tree by the (assailants), he fell onto the pole." The man, believed to be in his 40s, was found with his pants around his ankles. But he says it was from the bandits tugging on them as they hauled him out of the tree, Marchack said. Initial reports indicated the man was also tied up, but police said that was not the case. The injured man clung to the tree bleeding badly for up to two hours before being found, but he was conscious and able to talk. Police admit they are skeptical of the man's story, which is why they say detectives are looking into the matter further. Evidence was collected from the scene and officers canvassed residents of the surrounding area looking for witnesses. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with a section of the metal spike still in him. He underwent surgery for serious but not life-threatening injuries and is expected to be okay. 'OPEN MIND' Investigators at the scene said they are "keeping an open mind" and they hoped to know more once they speak to him. There were no classes at the public school because parent/teacher interviews were being conducted. But a privately run daycare within the school was open. The windows of the daycare, which look out onto the schoolyard and the tree, were covered as emergency crews cut the man free from the metal post. The schoolyard was sealed off and the daycare remained under lockdown for about an hour. The school's principal and staff at the daycare refused to comment. Lynn Ludford lives in a nearby condo that overlooks the schoolyard and said she became aware something going on as she was getting ready to take her dog, Hunter, for a walk. "When I heard the commotion I just didn't bother going out," she said. "There was a lot of noise, people yelling and stuff. It seemed like some sort of a tussle." Ludford said she often hears groups of "loud and boisterous" teenagers in the schoolyard during the wee hours, drinking and swearing. But this was "different." Yun He, one of many parents who stopped by the school for a parent/teacher interview, said the neighbourhood is normally quiet but lately there has been "some weird things going on." "I'm not really shocked, I'm just surprised," she said of the man being found ------------------------------------------------------ Comment: ummmm no comment
