Millions of frenchmen including president Jacques Chirac, fought over in Africa through reqired miltary service. The French lost all of those battles as well as the Algerian war. The French population knows a hell lot more about war than the American public.
And, those anti-French talking heads conveniently do not mention that France has always been the country with the most amount of troops in Afghanistan helping the US.

To slam the French is to trully reveal one's very ignorant pov.

what irks me is that their hands are bloodied even more so than most countries in terms of human rights violations...yet they maintain the holier than thou attitude of many Americans...and no...I don't believe that U.S. colonialism was anywhere near the size and scope of the French....
Ok. Please keep in mind that every industrialized country's flag has blood on it.

That's a tough argument to win which country has more blood on its hands-since all industrialized countries do.

I know of ppl that resisted the Nazi occupation but the Nazis did many heavy-handed things such as send to concentration camps school teachers that refused to fly the nazi flag. The nazis also disrupted national food supplies and left many with nothing to starve.

The French possibly currently have the upper hand re: Human rights vs the US since they have abolished the Death Penalty and have not renounced the Geneva Conventions.
Massively off-topic of the thread, tho.

I bet those who "hate" the French are not aware that the French are our strongest ally in Afghansistan as the country with the most amount of troops there after the US.
Slight correction, HAS cost each amerikan family $16,000

Yes, and bad publicity diminishes those economic returns.

The Olympics is just an industry... much like baseball, but not so well organized or governed mathematically. All this "bringing the world together" at the games is just the sales pitch.

Tell you what. When there's a Tibetan Jesse Owens kickin' the communist government sponsered athletes' ass then it'll mean something. other than that it's just a PR handjob to dupe the world into letting communist China's human rights abuses slide.

I read and saw a little about this today, and my thoughts have more to do with the protest process more than the tossing of water at people who, if I recall correctly, are actually being HONORED by invitation to participate in this arguably archaic yet ceremonial event.

I did like the San Fran bridge signs, mostly because they didn't involve a torch bearer coming under fire directly, but really, if we are going to stage a global protest against China shouldn't this have been objected to by now before the Committee that makes the decision?

I understand that recent events must be taken into consideration, but China? Really? Was it EVER a good idea that the Olympics should be held there?

I know there were initial protests, and I am not an authority on the selection process but there it is, all settled with ongoing rancor. Just like we want the Olympics to be in our global world.

Wasn't the time for protest when the Olympic Committee was considering China as a host nation?

Just asking.

I actually think it was a good idea...its put the national spotlight on China...and forced them to feel the wrath of world opinion....this may force changes quicker than if it had been denied...

Bullshit! It means people take a stand against oppression. They don't quietly sanction it by blowing their money on products from communist China.
