Not in the slightest. The revinue will go to corporations allied with the communist government, which will increase the institutions used to crack down on human rights in Tibet and China alike. Anyone who believes otherwise is fooling themselves.

I think anybody who doesn't believe that the communist government...aside from all of its ills...hasn't been investing heavily in expanding the infrastructure of the country is only fooling themselves...

I say my posted suggestion is exactly in the spirit of Jesse Owens to stick it to oppressors. so long as people are going to keep making excuses for the communist Chinese government's abuse and murder of Tibetans they'll continue to do it without apology. But if the humiliation is big enough of a slap to the communist government they'll be forced to rethink their hold on someone else's country.

Letting the communist government of China host the games is shameful. The protests are the way to let people understand that fact.
It's late and I'll get back to you tomorrow, but.....

Because a country is poor is exactly the reason they should celebrate the world class competition they can provide and participate in.

And protesting a form a government is not within the realm of athletics. That is the job of the UN and government.

I should bring up that the next Soccer World Cup will be in South Africa. Should we start the protests now?

So, more money for China is good because if the country fuels it's economy a smidge by hosting a global sporting event the people will revolt against it's ills?

Couldn't this have been accomplished by saying NO to China and dismissing it's entry as a potential host with laughter and a "Nice try, see us when you've stopped detaining monks," approach?

Guess not. They wouldn't be getting paid for it.

It wouldn't have gotten nearly as much publicity as it has now...would it?

Kaycee, I was agreeing with your statement.

My statement/question is that I think that that most people who are in favor of attacking the Olympic torch probably don't understand the concept of dedicating their time and life to athletic competition.

Like that wasn't going to happen eventually anyway; this time it'll work because a torch bearer got doused with water and the flame had to be extinguished on more than on occasion. Okaaay.

Real question is, would everything that's been going on in Tibet have happened if China wasn't hosting the Olympics?

I still don't think that they should be, just curious.
