My point isn't that the claim of a "near-by elementary school" is not supported, I have no doubt there was a school nearby. It would also have been true to say it was near a church. Or near a bar, that would also no doubt be true. The cougar wasn't issue enough? Why do they need to push the fear?

"JUST IMAGINE FOLKS! THIS VICIOUS CAT WAS TWO STEPS AWAY FROM CLAWING IT'S WAY THROUGH A KINDERGARDEN CLASS, MAYBE YOUR CHILD'S KINDERGARDEN CLASS!!!"

Hold the extra fear please.
This would be an issue for me even if they didn't kill the cat. Why can't they please stop pushing the fear? You should have heard the morons on local news the day after that coyote was captured last year, listing all the things a Chicagoan should do to protect themselves if they should come face to face with a coyote... as if this happened more than once in the last 100 years and people were being taken off the streets all the time by wild creatures.

I just can't stand how stupid they get with pushing the fear. After all the Bush years of getting fear rammed down our throats, using it as a tool to get everything he wants, I have no tolerance left for any kind of trumped up fear mongering.
Loving the cougar debate. I posted this article because a good friend of mine lives in an apartment backing to the alley in which the cougar was killed. She heard a helicopter, and gunshots a bit later. She figured it was any normal criminal gone awry story. Then the reporters came.

Yes, there was a school a block and a half away...Audobon Elementary School...my friend's daughter was in school that day. Nobody there was made aware of danger posed by the cougar.

They're saying the cougar came all the way from the black hills of South Dakota, DNA tests are being performed to confirm.

Seems ashame he made it that far to pursue his dreams of being an alley cat, only to be shot down.

Also...it is worthy to note that the cougar was spotted early in the morning, by a teacher at the school. The principal of the school called it in, law enforcement came, but school stayed in session.

Those kids they were protecting were sent home after school and the cougar was killed by a firing squad at 5:30.

I've heard stories about wild animals wandering into the Bronx as well. Animals show up in the strangest places.
chicago cops worry about paperwork after they discharge their weapons? hell, or even think before they discharge their weapons?

that is absurd in its irony...you should come for a visit and stay awhile to get the full effect of our police force....

If there's a police issue happening anywhere near the schools here, it's lockdown until he's found or admited lost.

I have to wonder about them allowing the kids to leave. This ordeal took all day?

Don't know about that I have friends that are avid hunters and have brought back pictures of bears that have run up trees when spotted. Surly a cougar would see a human long before the human would see the cougar and nobody was attacked seems a little strange.

Yes, it took all day. On animal control's advice, the kids were not allowed to go out for recess, but dismissal was as usual that afternoon, even though the cougar hadn't been found. 60% of the students are neighborhood children who walk home, the other 40% are bussed to other places.
