i live in upper michigan, the DNR confirmed cougar 'spoor' in our area as being from an actual cougar....many people have been talking cougar-sightings for the past many many years but the department of natural resources recognized something to that effect in the last month or so.

when i lived in Estes Park, they had a child killed by a cougar. he was hiking with his parents in the national park and was one turn ahead on the trail when the cougar jumped him and killed him before the parents even knew what happened. they strike fast and leap far. i wouldn't take chances.
i wonder if after the initial spotting they lost track of him and assumed he had moved on, making the school dismissal logical. when they spotted him again they may have been hell bent on not losing him again. or they could have been trigger happy yahoos. but i'll always side with the children's safety. i blame whatever idiot raised this animal in the city and turned him loose. |
