A good agency has patrol Admin. on duty 24/7 to help prevent this. They monitor the radios and ride around checking up on the patrol units. (That's another reason so many cops carry cells with two-way). K9 officers have to be the most restrained. They are walking around with a four-legged lawsuit waiting to happen. Hell, my squad did a car pursuit on a dirtbag that broke into an elderly couple's home, burglarized it, and he stole their car as well. One of my units saw the vehicle and had me run it through NCIC to confirm it stolen (even tho' he knew I'd just entered it stolen-he was thorough), and after it was confirmed he "lit 'em up" (lights), and the subject chose to run. The squad chased him all the way out to Tampa Bay where he ran the car into the mangroves. The foot pursuit began, and my K9 Cpl. yelled at him to stop 6 times...then he released the dog. The subject was in the water by then, and he started drowning the dog, so my Cpl. gave the bite command. The dog could only reach his face due to the hold the subject had on him, so he peeled the guys face down on one side, and the focker let go. EMS was called, yada, yada, yada. The AH now has an active lawsuit against the agency. 'Nuff said? |

And let me just say, once more, I am not saying these three dudes should not be prosecuted. If they are guilty by all means convict. Verbally resisting gives cops the rights to beat my brains in?? Thin skinned, much? These dudes were ON THE GROUND AND RESTRAINED. THE COPS KEPT BEATING THEM. Regardless of 'high emotions' or being 'verbally resisted' these cops overreacted. Let me repeat for everyone to hear one more time: ON THE GROUND AND RESTRAINED. COPS KEPT BEATING THEM.

As far as I'm concerned they should be treated like an officer under the law. Gawd knows they have way more training! My K9 Cpl. trained that dog daily and kept meticulous records. He also attended every law enforcement K9 event or conference. |
