Obama attacks Bush over Iran barb

May 15th BBC

Quote:
Mr Obama accused Mr Bush a "launching a political attack"

Barack Obama has accused George W Bush of attacking him after the US president compared those in favour of talking to terrorists to Nazi appeasers.

The White House has denied that the remarks - from a speech to the Israeli parliament - were aimed at Mr Obama.

Mr Obama, who is the frontrunner to become the Democrats' presidential nominee, has argued in favour of negotiating with the Iranian regime.

But he has ruled out talking to militant organisations like Hamas.

'False comfort'

"Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals," said Mr Bush in his speech.

"We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement."

Mr Obama responded in a statement:

I understand when you're running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you... it is not true in this case
Dana Perino
White House spokeswoman

"It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack. George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists."

But White House spokeswoman Dana Perino rejected Mr Obama's interpretation of the president's remarks, saying "there are many who have suggested these types of negotiations with people that the president... thinks that we should not talk to".

"I understand when you're running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you," she added.

"That is not always true. And it is not true in this case."

The BBC's James Coomarasamy in Washington says the row indicates that Republicans have identified Senator Obama's Middle East policy and his perceived weakness amongst Jewish voters as a key point of attack, should he, as many expect, be Republican John McCain's opponent in the November election.

Mr Obama raised eyebrows last year when he first stated his support for direct negotiations without preconditions with the controversial Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

His position has been criticised, not only by John McCain, but also by Mr Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton.
That's a pretty solid response: "It's not all about you!"

The tradition has always been that when a U.S. President is overseas, partisan politics stops at the water's edge. President Bush has now taken that principle and turned it on its head: for this White House, partisan politics now begins at the water's edge, no matter the seriousness and gravity of the occasion. Does the president have no shame?
How can one ask this kinda question of a man that has the blood of over a million ppl on his dirty hands............

he has lied to the American ppl & the world.... He has invaded other nations, seized their wealth. Stood by as their national treasures & heritage were plundered, occupied their land & tortured their ppl..........

He has torn the constitution & the Geneva convention to shreds, abused his power & disgraces our laws................

How in the world could you expect such a man to be capable of respecting a mere tradition that has has been respected by all those that came before him.........

Negotiating with terrorists is different than negotiating with nations. When you negotiate with terrorists, opportunists become terrorists.

As I sit here reading the transcript of Bush’s speech!

It is painfully obvious to me, that he is talking about Carter’s little photo-op trip to Syria.

I find it absurd that anyone could even think that Bush might have been talking about Obama.

Yet Clinton, Obama, Pelosi, and even Biden all go on the war path. Giving McCain even more ammo to work with. If this back-fires on the Democrats, Carter will be able to carve another notch into his belt of screw-ups.

If Carters little bs photo-op trip costs the Democrats the White House, they will never be able to live it down.

manachin bagen was a terrorist???

What about those ppl that dressed up like Indians & dumped tea........??

A terrorist is anyone that is opposed to american hegemony & conquest.......... All these pretty sounding words all add up to demonizing anyone that stands in our way.. & our way is teh right way.........

Blowing ppl up w/ sophisticated bombs, missiles & helicopters & invading countries killing thousands if not millions to get one man is not terrorism..........

Using some less sophisticated form of murder- that is terrorism......

If I use a car bomb & kill twenty kids it is terrorism.. If I kill twenty kids using a American made rocket fired into an apartment building it is not..............

Bush is tentatively claiming Iran is Nazi Germany and Hitler has returned to finish the Jew-job. Really though, it has nothing to do with Jews. It has some to do with Israel, and a lot to do with Bush and the film he produced called Star Wars 7: The Axis of Evil.

Republicans don't use the reality part of their brain enough (the left side). I'm right-brained, but my love of science has always kept me well-balanced. Republicans though are all the religious people who attempt to destroy science. Can't let reality ruin your fantasy.

Ptech is going down hill
I think it was Colbert but maybe Stewart who showed short video clips of Bush talking about Nazis. In public speeches, obviously.

I was amazed at how many times he mentioned it, and seemed quite knowledgeable about it, as though he had been trained.
