Because that very first episode kinda sucked, they didn't find their pace for about 6 weeks. Yes. I know because I was there. I'm THAT old.

I missed the very first episode. I didn't start watching until my brother called before the third or fourth episode and told me to watch. |

Growing up in Chicago, in high school my buddy and I would go down to Old Town on Saturday nights, after the main show at Second City it was free to get in to see the improv from 11:00 to midnight. I think it was the forth or firth SNL before Belushi made a face that flipped a switch in my memory and I remembered he was the same guy I saw at Second City doing an improv sketch about a guy with crabs visiting a female doctor... and deciding that the crabs weren't all that bad afterall and he'd prefer to keep them rather than disrobe for the ladydoc. I'm still pissed about John Belushi's death. What a waste that was.

I am sad to say I have only been to Chicago once, and on that trip I made a point of going to Second City to just stand in the lobby in awe. (I loved Chicago; plan to return.)
I am pissed that I did not appreciate Chris Farley when he was alive. I barely watched SNL during the years he was on. Recently, I saw a Farley skit with Alec Baldwin in which Farley played an American tourist who accidentally becomes a contestant on a Japanese game show. It was one of the funniest skits I have ever seen. |

I don't know if it was ever repeated on television, but John Belushi impersonating a pubic crab was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. |
