Supreme Court says individuals have right to own guns

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791. The amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Perhaps, but in 10 years they will change their minds. The court tends to go back and forth on a lot of issues.

I am VERY happy at the Supreme court descision. What scares me the most is that there were 4 justices who did not side with the founding fathers. Anyway, this ruling is a step in the right direction. Had the court not ruled this way, it would have been the death knell to the 2A, and the rest of the Constitution would not have been far behind.

Agreed, need guns to deter "tyranny".

As it is maybe someone considering "breaking and entering" will think twice about a possible introduction to Smith & Wesson. Is the little lady of the house intimate with a Colt ?

I agree with the decision in context with the argument presented.

But nobody "agreed with" or "didn't side" with the founding fathers. No one truly knows the actual intent of the amendment from that standpoint, there's not enough historical documentation about the subject.

What they did do is attempt to interpet the spirit of the law and if the argument presented has valitity. Which I believe it did. What crossed the line and what was ruled against was using the location of some one's home as a regulatory standard. Which was wrong.

A great decision!

Isn't it ironic, that there would be 2 fine decisions by the Court within a period of 2 weeks? Amazing!
