(R) Former Senator Jesse Helms dead on 4th of July
Jesse Helms, the North Carolina Republican whose unyielding conservatism and obstructionist tactics won him the nickname “Senator No” during his five terms on Capitol Hill, died in Raleigh, N.C., today. He was 86.
He died of natural causes, said his former chief of staff, Jimmy Broughton. |

Helms died from natural causes during the early morning hours of July 4, 2008, at the age of 86. Mr. Helms died at 1:15 a.m., said the Jesse Helms Center at Wingate University in North Carolina. The center's president, John Dodd, said in a statement that funeral arrangements were pending.
