And here we sit with no political party to take up the fight for the environment.

This is by far one of the worst things to happen to the waters in northern California in a very long time. This will take forever to clean up. With all the crap happening to California, you'd think someone had it in for us.......ok, they do, but you know what I mean.

Coast Guard Crews Monitor Oil Spill In S.F. Bay
Cargo Ship Earlier Bumped Into Bay Bridge POSTED: 10:05 am PST November 8, 2007 UPDATED: 6:23 pm PST November 8, 2007 SAN FRANCISCO -- Oil leaked from a cargo ship that bumped the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is washing up on beaches as far as 40 miles north of San Francisco, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday. Cleanup crews have helicopters surveying the damage, as well as skimmers sucking up the oil on the bay and ocean. Teams are also walking the shoreline scooping up the oil, authorities said. About 58,000 gallons of oil spilled from the ship when it struck a tower supporting the bridge Wednesday morning. The accident caused no structural damage to the span, officials said, but vessel's hull suffered a large gash. It is now being anchored off Candlestick Point in the bay. The spill has closed several area beaches. "By our guidelines it is a medium-sized spill. But in the San Francisco Bay Area, that is a big deal," said Coast Guard Capt. William Uberti, captain of the Port of San Francisco and the chief federal officer investigating the incident. Scientists are still assessing the best cleanup techniques and the environmental impact. A small number of birds have been spotted coated in oil. The pilot of the ship is being interviewed by Coast Guard authorities. If he's to have acted negligently or recklessly, authorities said he could close his state's pilot license. Authorities said the oil traveled as far north as Dillon Beach on the Marin County-Sonoma County line. It's also been spotted on the shores of Angel and Alcatraz islands and Crissy Field near the Golden Gate Bridge. Bay Area resident Silvie Gregory wondered how such a giant ship could hit the bridge in the first place. "What was the state of the person who was doing the navigating?" Gregory asked. Closed Beaches, Parks Officials said the following 16 beaches and parks are closed as a result of the oil spill:

I remember writing letters back in high school, to no avail, that the oil companies, all of them, shoud establish a global spill clean up system. Then, we wouldn't be concerned about who's responsible for a spill. Instead, this organization would immediately start cleaning it.
I revisited these thoughts with the Valdez. A lot of "who's responsibility" questions ensued. Under my system we'd bypass that question and simply get to work cleaning.

What's the chance of your system happening with oil men in the WH? Approaching zero. Oil is still dragging it's feet paying for Valdez! That does not make it a bad idea of course. When I'm president - oil is going to PAY!

Any oil company can have an accident. So, let them share the risk with a system that's no fault. Just clean it up asap.
