Democratic Candidates are No-Shows for Mukasey Vote
Democratic Candidates are No-Shows for Mukasey Vote
Written by Chris Floyd Friday, 09 November 2007 Here are a few profiles in courage for you. On the nomination of Michael Mukasey to be Attorney General of the United States: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY: did not vote. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill: did not vote. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn: did not vote. Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del: did not vote. There you have it. The only four Democratic senators who did not vote on the nomination of Mukasey – and the legitimization of torture and presidential tyranny it represents – were the four Democratic senators seeking the presidency. Draw your own conclusions on the implications of these absences, and what they portend for the possibilities of genuine reform should any of these worthy paladins win the White House. http://www.chris-floyd.com/index.php...347&Itemid=135 |

What a great example they set not only to get out and vote but to totally side step an important issues. What a shame. None of these candidates will be taken serious if they have anything to say about Mukasey one way or the other, nor should they be.

I have mixed feelings. Would there vote have changed the outcome? I'm sure they knew what the whip count was.
On the other hand, if I were a republican, knowing what the whip count was, I might have changed my vote to make it close enough that their votes would have mattered.

Sad but probably true, that's one of the reasons Hillary's opponents use it against her, it's an easy cop out to say you didn't vote. One that I won't buy though.

It gets even worse. They're openly defending the Democratic leadership's position to block the impeachment of Cheney. It's sad how far Democratic Party has fallen.

Well, not that I am opposed to impeachment (of either him or Bush) but I think the damage is already done. At this point it seems the best we can hope for is their term to expire and move on, barring a coup d'état that is.

Their decision not to vote is disgusting. Riding the fence is not leadership.
They need to pick a side regardless if it was not going to change the outcome. They are suppose to have influence over Congress. I am sure if they were voting en masse against him, other demo's would have joined in. They absolutely could have changed the vote. Not voting is a tacit yes vote. |
