Having read both the WaPo's story and NYT, it seems to me that while one person, I think still unnamed, called him a homocidal maniac, every other person called him a normal and caring person with an active social life.

I happened to catch Keith Olberman's treatment of it, and it was good as usual. He had some fellow on whose name I can't remember that was an author of some sort, having investigated the anthrax thingy for quite some time.
It is also possible, however unlikely, that Ivins' bizarre behavior was induced by drugs. |

I'm unable to find a link, but on the news scroll this morning, I saw a report that the grand jury in Ivins' case still had "weeks worth of evidence" to go over before handing down any indictment. Something isn't right here, and I stand by the notion that it's inconceivable for the US attorney to notify a suspect in a case of terrorism of pending charges.

No it isn't. Reading them the charges and their rights when you take them into custody is. Show me where in the Constitution it says that somebody accused of felony murder has the right to be informed of the charges days or weeks before an arrest is made. As Harper pointed out, it's simply normal protocol for the US attorney to notify defense counsel in a Federal case of pending charges but this case isn't normal at all. Do you think they sent a letter to Ted Kozinsky's P.O. box to let him know that he was about to get nabbed for being the Unibomber?

I agree with Ibex. There is no legal obligation to inform people they are under investigation, but a prosecutor actually interested in discovering the truth, as opposed to getting a conviction, would want to have as much information as he could get, one would think.

Timothy McVeigh committed a crime that any American could have committed as long as they could afford to purchase fertilizer, and deisel fuel, and was apprehended quickly, tried, and exectuted..The bombing took place in 1995..McVeigh was arrested two days later, and put to death in 2001
Ivins committed a crime that only someone with access to millitary grade anthrax could committ, and the investigation has been going on for seven years????..And then he decides to committ suicide, and they close the investigation??..They must have been absolutely sure it was him, and for how long have they been sure?..He died from a drug overdose?..How convenient..The perfect crime..Guaranteed he got snuffed out Seven fucking years!!..Millitary grade anthrax!! They had to have known it was millitary grade soon after the first mailing..Seven years???? We have met the enemy..and it is us Last edited by slowhand; 08-04-2008 at 12:30 PM. |

They claim to have DNA evidence. His OWN brother said he was nuts.
One would think they would have been much more careful after wrongly investigating the other scientist.
