damn birds, they move too fast...

If you haven't been following...I found an osprey nest in a cell tower.

Notice the fish in the talons...

I'm a little short on magnification...80-200.

To get any size, I'm cropping way too much.

So...I'll make still another visit, and hope they come just a little lower when they scope me out.

What is it about the osprey near you? My buddy sent me an osprey pic from a refuge in Fla. and it had that same "molting" look.

The feathers on the ones up here, are much more sleek looking.

Cool pic Santa....

Another crappy pic...due to cropping, but you can see the fish really well in this one....and the stream of osprey crap just behind him.

I think it was aiming at me!

Great pics, it would take a pretty huge lens to get any real detail on top of those towers (I assume that tower is between 200-300 ft. tall) so I have little doubt that you would have to crop to see any detail. Were these pics taken in Fla.-if so you will be pleased to know that they will not disturb the nests. It would be illegal even if they needed to work on the equiptment on the tower.

I don't know NY policy but I'm sure they are also protective of endangered or threatened species. (I'm not sure of the Osprey's current status) I do know that when I was in Fla. climbing towers we had a tower to inspect with an ospery nest at the top and we were not allowed to climb any closer than 10-15 ft. of the nest. I don't think it would be a good idea to get much closer than that anyway, those talons look like they could leave a mark. I can tell that tower is at least 200 ft. from the light, and generally Cell Towers don't exceed 350 ft. If your curious count the sections of the tower and multiply x 20 as each section is 20 ft.

Thanks...I'll do that.

The osprey are protected, as are all raptors around here. They suffered the same ddt problems that the eagles did, but have rebounded nicely. In fact, they are doing better than the eagles, due to their ability to coexist w/humans. They don't require the privacy that eagles do, when nesting.

Tell me...what exactly, if anything, is being emitted by those towers? Any harmful microwaves, etc. that would affect the osprey?

There are no harmful emissions from cell tower antenna, which is what those are. Television and radio antenna are a whole different story, but they are generally too tall and the shape of those towers are not conducive to nest building. To further explain the cell towers are emitting and receiving cellular signals, which are very low intensity as far as ability to harm living creatures. If the antenna were pointed inward and constantly facing the chicks there might be some damage to them but short term exposure from flying in front of the antenna would have no effect.

Thanks again...there's one right across the street from my GF's house...

Never liked the thought of it. Now I won't be concerned.
