A flicker family I've been watching. Late in the day, so I'm not thrilled w/quality.
My first shoot. I'm going to go back earlier in the day w/better lighting. Checking the nest ![]() Oh! I didn't see you in there! ![]() All right already...dinner's almost ready ![]() I swear I'm not having any more kids! ![]()

Crappy quality, but the subjects are cool! I've been observing the nest for some time. I first noticed it because there were two starlings harrassing the flickers. I took note, and now see the flickers won out. I did some research, and found this starling/flicker game is common Northern Flicker 2001 nest box cam As the male flicker worked indefatigably on the cavity in the sycamore, often 5 or 6 starlings would perch on a nearby dead branch, within 3 feet of the flicker, just staring at him. They obviously knew the cavity was too small and that it would soon be large enough for a starling nest. Often when the flicker would leave to feed, a starling would perch on the hole and peer inside.

Thanks guys
I'm going to reshoot, and get better ones.
Believe it or not, this tree is in a really bad neighborhood. I have to stand in the middle of the street to get the angle I need. All the while, some pretty skanky folks are speeding by, on their way to, or from the crack dealer at the end of the street. So, I've got one eye in the viewfinder, and one eye on the street. I hadn't noticed that my settings were quite a bit underexposed for most of these. I did some correcting w/free editing program. On top of that, it was at the end of the day, so there were shadows, and strong backlighting to begin with. I'm definitely going back when the sun is on the other side of the tree. The subjects are cool, though...

You should look into selling that flicker in flight photo DEEEZ. I'm serious as a heart attack. That's Birding Book quality and a rare shot! I'd copyright that pic and remove it off here. I'll wager Sibley Books or National Audubon Books would pay a nice wad for it. As for the late in the day bit...Photoshop would fix that in a jiffy.
