Wild & Healthy

Sooo, I hear Coco barking her ass off, and I went to see why.

I started my day out relocating this fat sucker from my yard to a creek area a few miles away. Has he been eating good or what? When I grabbed him behind his head it was a battle just to keep my grip. Man, he was strong! This is a crappy pic, but I swear his girth was as big as a small grapefruit.

(For those not familiar with snakes it's a Crotalus horridus, Canebrake Rattlesnake aka Timber Rattler.)

Man...you've got quite an array of snakes in your region...I assume this one is venemous?

Yep. According to Wikipedia: this is one of North America's most dangerous snakes, due to its long fangs, impressive size and high venom yield. Four venom patterns have been described for this species. (neurotoxic, hemorrhagic and proteolytic, and a small basic peptide that works as a myotoxin, a fibrinogen-clotting enzyme that can produce defibrination syndrome, and a bradykinin-releasing enzyme.)

Oh hell yeah I was careful! This is the second big Canebrake I've removed and relocated out of our yard this year. The last one I probably would have gotten nailed by had hubby not seen him. He was coiled up and wallowed down in dead leaves around the Red Oak I feed my Cardinals by...he matched the environment to perfection. Methinks he'd had several Cardinal snacks.

This is the downside to living so deep in the woods. I'm in their turf, so I have to be ever watchful.

I was raised hand catching them, but I'm aging just enough that my reflexes are slowing down. I cheat now..pinned him down with a stick and eased my hand up behind his head. I just wasn't going to take a chance of getting popped by this old boy. I didn't hurt him doing that, and then we put him in a 5 gal bucket with snap lid and transported him down the highway and offroad to that creek area where there's a good food source for him. This pic is when we opened the bucket and released him. He was glad to go, lol.

I know, Mr Heretic likes to remind me of that...I think I'll keep my distance from certain creatures nonetheless

I agree, but I understand that they taste like chicken....

At least it would have led a snakely life and died a noble death before ending up as dinner. In contrast to chickens and cattle that they keep in cages and mistreat.....
