The Media's Role In Bringing Down a Phenomenon
Looking at today's headlines on CNN their lead story in the Politics section is Analysis: The [negative] Wright effect on presidential race with the same pride one might have after having won a prize for their hard work. Both MSNBC and CNN also tout that the polls are shifting with the same enthusiasm.
For several weeks the focus of the media has been the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Senator Obama's controversial preacher of 20 years who has been quoted as saying "God Damn America". Wrights hotly contested words have been aired in an endless loop in the media with no end in site. The appeal of Wright still peaks the interest of the country, especially since coming out last weekend and proving that he is, at the very least, controversial as well as fueling a fire that had finally smoldered. McCain went out of his way to seek the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee, who claimed Hurricane Katrina was a punishment from God because they were going to hold a gay pride parade in New Orleans. While it may not be "God Damn America" it's certainly God Damn New Orleans and God Damn gay people. While the coverage of Pastor Hagee is virtually no where in the main stream media the focus on Wright takes the headlines. Why is this? An angry black man is much more compelling than a conservative white pastor who's belief system is a throw back to the 1950's south. Hagee and McCain get a free pass. Rush Limbaugh can freely incite race riots in Denver during the upcoming Democratic Convention in Denver. It does beg the question, what if Wright would have made the same statement? Race is evident and in the forefront in this election cycle. How it will turn out is up to the people and whether or not they choose to let the media influence their decision. |

As I stated I wish the rev would go on a long vacation somewhere. Like a small out of the way island off THailand........
According to the pastor this media frenzy is not a result of its news worthiness but rather the insecurities of those that do the reporting........ I imagine if they continue to taunt him @ some point he is going to be inspired to expose that........ That I believe is much more likely than a vp hillary knock out media blow sometime after the convention...... But @ this point I will take it anyway I could get it..........lol

John Kerry to Alex Witt(less) on MSNBC, April 30, 2008:
WITT: Okay. He said it. A 20-year relationship. Reverend wright married him. He is the one who baptized a god parent. How personally painful is this for him? KERRY: Can I say something to you? Obviously it is painful and he said it. You folks need to let go of this. Television needs to stop dwelling on something that is in the past. I thought Barack Obama yesterday gave America his second big presidential moment of this campaign. The first when he spoke out about the issue of race. The second yesterday, when he made it clear, every one of the statements of the minister are just unacceptable. They're not the person that he knew before. Now let's move on to how we'll put people to work. How are you going to give people health care? How are you going to create jobs in america? What Barack Obama is offering in this gas price issue is real leadership. I mean, do we want people who sort of put their fingers in the wind and throw out an idea for the short term that is sort of politically pleasing, or do you want a here who stands up and says, no, what we need is to really lower gas prices by having a real energy policy, an intelligent policy that puts in place the incentives for renewable fuels and alternative fuels. That's what Barack Obama is doing. And it is you guys have to focus on the thing that really matter to the American electorate. The other thing is just worn out, old history now. This guy had his narcissistic moment and it is finished. WITT: Okay. Point well taken. Did I say to begin, can I just say, sir, I knew you weren't going to like that question. On the record. KERRY: Let's move on to the thing that really matter to people. I think people in America are tired of this stuff. WITT: Okay. (Of course, we all know that John Kerry has no credibility because the MSM did nothing to refute the Swift Boat ads and the claims of the wingnuts that Kerry shot himself to earn a purple medal.)

Yeah except i noticed all the "wright" lovers are suddenly really quite, or they are the first to jump off the boat. Psh most people here were stroking him off until this happened.

To be blunt..how many Catholics do you know who have left their church even after years of staying with pedophiles for priests?
How many Christians besides McCain should tell Hagee to get off the perch instead of feeling honored he was to endorse McCain? Wright is a pebble in the bucket in comparison. This is about race..plain and simple.

Am corps like the status quo so they do not want change at all. Corporate media are a part of this apparatus, of course.
So they are all kicking and screaming like hell because they certainly do not want any change that one candidate represents. ~ My $0.02 |

Rather than make some weeping swipe w/ a wide broom point some fingers..........![]() I for one have supported almost every thing the man says........ I just don't want him going around saying it now............ Nothing he has said has not been said before... & by many others.......... These ideals/views are neither unique to him, his church, his faith or his race.............. Many of these same things have been said here numerous times & nary a fucking peep out of the locals. Certainly not the scorn & ridicule we hear now.......... Go head take your pick.................... ![]() ![]()

But I have to give Father Ralph credit. He was not allowed by the church to discuss any form of birth control, but he would go into these long hypotheitcal situations that managed to inform us of birth control without violating their rules. "...but you didn't here it from me." was how he ended each paragraph. Good ol' Father Ralph. Then on our honeymoon in Jamaica we met Rasta Ralph. He was pretty cool too. The media sucks soooooo bad it drives me nuts. I wasn't going to watch any news until Tuesday but I fell off the wagon this morning, and was immediatly reminded why i got on the wagon to start with. News show has a rep from the Obama campaign and one from the Clinton camp, as the final question before running out of time the Obama rep was asked about the 18cent gas tax cut that Clinton wants but Obama points out will hurt more people than it helps. The Obama rep explained how that tax goes to fund highway repair jobs and would only save the typical driver something like $28 over the summer. The Clinton camper got the final say, and said that "Senitor Clinton wants to help the working class and stop all these windfall profits for big oil." They're talking about a tax on gas that the government collects, That 18cents per gallon doesn't go into the big oil profits. But of course that was the end of the show so that statment was left hanging there unopposed as if it was valid. Seems I learned a long time ago, if you have to twist the facts, omit information or out and out lie to defend your position, your position probably isn't worth defending. (is this thread in the correct forum? not that I care or anything) Last edited by Rollerball; 05-04-2008 at 11:42 AM. |
