It beats me. How do you explain the complaints about taking Jesus out of Christmas then? Why would he be connected to the date? Was it his wedding day?

Yule blessings. (That's the sabbat/holiday it actually is/was...)
I'll wager Christ might like his Bday being celebrated at the correct time of the wheel/year, yes? I'm not taking a sarcastic tone here, btw. Remember the Julian calendar: 12/25 would be 1/7 I believe? Some scholars note that Luke's descriptions of shepherds' activities at the time of Jesus' birth suggest a spring or summer date....I dunno? How cold does it get in the fields those shepherds tended in December? I have no clue. Would they be sleeping in them in December? This has always made me curious.

Winter Solstice is 12/22/07. Have a cool Yule! I'll be burning my Yule log like a good lil pagan, lol.

Peace.

poor repressed christians....We've got groups like the ACLU and NAACP....but nobody to watch out for the poor repressed christians....don't they deserve a voice in this country too? Don't they have a right to be greeted properly with "Merry Christmas" on somebody else's property that they willingly entered? What has this country come to....

Christmas and Solstice used to fall on the same day, Dec 25th. When we changed calendars solstice had to change, since it was obviously based on the movements of the sun and has nothing to do with any date...Christmas however did not. At one time I read a quote about why but I can't find it now.

12/25 is the birthday of many gods, Sun gods mostly.

I can't think of a single Christian tradition that isn't a copy of something practiced before by other religions in worship of other gods.

I hate christmas, but I enjoy the music.

One need not be italian to like pizza.

I figure "free speech" means some people will be offended once in a while.

"Merry christmas" "Happy Holidays" "Season's greetings" etc. What the hell's the difference; it all a jesture of a pleasant thought.

Personally, I call them hassledays, as that's what we turn them into.

Does the bible tell us to spend money we can't afford in order to celebrate anything?

I remember, when my kids were young and the weather started getting cold in October, I said to the wife, "They could use some gloves."

She responded, "Maybe Santa will bring some."

I asked, "don't you think they'll need the gloves long before then?"

There's a control and obsession connected to Christmas that is not such a good thing.

It's funny...I don't like it for almost the oposite reason. Usually when people ask you for a Christmas list, because they don't actually know what you might want or need, you put down a bunch of stuff that...go figure...you really want or need. Then you're at the store, with the money, looking at the thing you need...thinking, "Shit, I asked for that for Christmas...DAMN IT!!!"

Really, I'd like to not get gifts. You get gifts and you have to figure out what to do with them. It's a big fucking mess.

This is great! I think the same thing..Dec 25th is too long to wait for gloves. If it wasn't for the children, they'd probably do away with Santa Clause and Christmas.

It's also the birthday of the Greek mythilogical God Mythros whom was born in a rock tomb, hence the ressurection. I'm not sure I spelled that right. The Christians stole that December 25th date from the Greeks.
