Put into terms you can fail to understand, a horse and a mule cannot procreate. Nor can an ass and a mule. Does this mean that mules are not the same species as either of their parents? You bet it does. Then again, mules cannot procreate with mules either... Maybe mules aren't the same species as mules.

If their offspring was only sterile as often as occurs in the general population for horses and asses, it would mean nothing. The FACT that the offspring of a horse and an ass is INVARIABLY sterile proves that they are the result of cross-breeding that is partailly successful.
