Lammas comes between August first and second. It is a hot, lazy, delicious time of the year. Bees buzz in the heat of the day, the air is still, and the force of the sun remains strong, even though its sway over the earth is slowly diminishing day by day. In the cooler nighttime, frogs and crickets keep us company. It is here, in the gloaming, when so many rituals begin.......
This is when the powerful gods of the grain harvests are honored. They are in their prime, sometimes generous, sometimes quixotic, and always aware with a bittersweet pleasure that their time will wane, as it always does, and they will die, as they always do, and yet nevertheless they will return to another delicious summer next year, as they always do, and have, and will, for this is the endlessly circling Wheel of the Year, and they ride it proudly.

Yet there is a darker nuance, one that surprised me, for I had thought that this was a purely masculine god's festival. I learned however of Lugh's touching and loving devotion to his foster-mother, the royal Tailtiu, whose fate may be even more intimately woven into this season than his.........

You know, we do most of our living in "ordinary" days, taking most things for granted just the way we do the people we love. Yet there are countless encounters during the course of each day that call out for appreciation.

And while we're counting our blessings let's not forget about our girlfriends. They are a constant reminder of the Goddess' devotion to our well-being. I hope you have one or more who is both near and dear.

The Goddess speaks to us in all those intimate chats and confessions we have with our girlfriends.

And the Goddess often sends us her energy through our friends. With a friend we are in a constant state of grace, loved unconditionally and always understood.

This was beautifully expressed in the following email that I received. Unfortunately, as is too often the case, the author was not identified. Here is what she said:

Here is what I know about girlfriends:

--girlfriends bring casseroles and scrub your bathroom when you need help.

--girlfriends keep your children and your secrets.

--girlfriends give you advice when you ask, though sometimes you keep it and sometimes you don't.

--girlfriends don't always tell you you're right, but they usually tell you the truth.

--girlfriends still love you even when they don't approve of your choices.

--girlfriends laugh with you and don't need canned jokes to start the laughter.

--girlfriends pull you out of jams.

--girlfriends will celebrate for your son or daughter when they get married or have a baby, in whichever order that happens.

--girlfriends are there for you in an instant when hard times come.

--girlfriends listen when you lose a job or a friend.

--girlfriends listen when you children break your heart.

--girlfriends listen when your parents' minds and bodies fail.

Our mothers, daughters, sisters, and girlfriends bless our lives.
Tell them how much you treasure the gift of their friendship, and tell them often.

Open Letter to the Economy

July 26th, 2008

Dear Economy:

I know we are not in the habit of talking; in fact, I feel much as an agnostic must feel upon addressing God. So by way of introduction, allow me to share a memory with you. My little brother Aaron and I were in the car with my father. I was 19 or 20, my little brother 7 or 8. They were recounting the events of a Lakers basketball game. My father expressed dismay at Rick Fox’s abysmal performance. My brother, shaking his head of blond curls, laughed, “Rick Fox sucks.”

My father, a proponent of rearing children to use the English language to the best of their abilities and also of teaching children not to denigrate others, replied, “Rick Fox could do better.”

My brother rolled his eyes. “Yeah, a lot better.”

I don’t wish to be rude or to denigrate you, Economy, but in the words of my father, you could do better.

We need to honor and respect our Mother Earth. She is the source of all life. The sun shines life to the earth, then the earth produces life in all forms and in a balanced way. Everything is here to serve everything else. If we interrupt the flow in any way, we leave nothing for the future generations. Before every decision is made, we should ask, and answer, a final question, "If we do this, what will be the effects on the seventh generation? What will we cause our children to live with?" We need to have respect and love for all things and for all people. We need to do this for ourselves and for all the children still unborn.

My Creator, let me look at nature today and let me have the highest respect for all the things I see. All the two legged, the four legged, the winged ones, the plants, the water, the air, the Mother Earth. Let me have respect for myself.
