I meant "why are there so many crazies in religion". In my mind, religion is supposed to bring you comfort, peace, and respect for others. These stories make me incredibly angry and incredibly sad.

But interpretation is based upon belief. If you believe the book must be interpreted literally, that it is the literal truth, then you will carry out the punishments written therein literally. If you believe you will get a hero's welcome in heaven for "martyring" yourself, you just might do it.

I think our "letting go" of the strict punishments comes from our ability to doubt the literal truth of our holy books. IMO, this doubt is a very, very good thing.

Agreed! In fact I would state the great majority are very good people. Where there is doubt, there is hope. I would apply this to science as well. Whenever we think we have achieved perfect understanding we are probably deluded.

Religion is for behavior control.

The vast majority or religious people hate me so,
please, tell what is loving and wonderful again.

NOT ONE religious person
can refrain from spouting some sort of superiority.

"...but ours is the best. "
"but ours is the most loving!
( said while hating )"
"but ours is the only truth"

If you HAVE TO HAVE some sort of pinnical to make you happy
then you are just engaging in dog-pack behavior.

Your words seek to have all others be
belly-up saying that you are correct.
Patheticly un-human

Religion is the most organized form of stupid.

Really, what will ACTUALLY happen to you if you let it go?

Religion is un-tarnished by ANY proof.

The WORST of human behavior is STILL religious.

Dogs behave better and are NON-religious.
They DO NOT care how many books you show them

The difference though is religion works in absolutes. It is either true or false. Science works on gradations. We know gravity, because we don't float into the sky and we can pick things up and drop them. That much, we know is true. But, beyond that, what do we know about gravity? For the longest time, people thought Newtonian gravity was correct. Until Einstein.

In science, it is an everlasting, continuing process to understand the universe completely. In religion, it is heaven or hell.

I don't really know the religious leanings of the people on this board, but over on the HBO board, I swear everyone absolutely REFUSED to criticize Islam.
Yeah, and right wing extremist xstians gave a congressman shit when he wanted to be sworn into office with a Qur'an instead of a bible. As far as I'm it's the same thing.
