Good luck enforcing that. might as well say it's a sin for the Earth to circle the sun.

It was a sin to say, but suppose the Earth itself sinned for defying the "God's authority" on Earth.

Actually you're wrong, I've read it many times.

my guess would be no, but i could be wrong about that...i liken the above question to that which the catholic religion uses to keep people in line, eternal hell for not obeying...
Of course not, they were instructed to do something and they were expected to comply. However, when they did misbehave, this is where the concept of guilt is applied. Establishing a sense of guilt is the essential building block for future decision making.

personally, i would not litter and have often picked up trash on the side of a highway or in my neighbourhood, but i don't do it to be "rewarded" with heaven and i don't litter out of a fear of hell...it's just a conscionable thing to do...to make this a sin, well, i have to question the motive...does the vatican expect all production to grind to a halt for fear of hell? do they think people are just all of a sudden going to stop driving suvs, leaving all the lights in the house on or supporting companies that have high levels of pollution? the article mentioned that relatively few catholics even attend confession anymore, so are they just trying to drive up their penance numbers?

what're they going to change the 10 commandments now, too?

i disapprove, probably because of my catholic upbringing, yes that's more than likely what it is, in the fear tactics they use to manipulate people into doing what they say...
I too was brought up knowing the scourge of the nun's ruler, albeit once a week in catechism class until 10th grade and not as a parochial school attendee.

So you know there are two classes of sin, mortal and venial.

Mortal sin will separate you from your relationship with God and probably will send you to hell. I think it's unclear if you can actually do enough penance to make up for mortal sins. I really don't think mobsters get a free pass, or even a trip to purgatory, for confessing their hits on their death beds, like in the movies.

Venial sins will not send you to hell and but it will damage your relationship with God if not reconciled through confession or taking the Eucharist.

All that being said, these new sins are described as 'known sins' anyway. Specifically "known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole."

And if people don't want to go to confessions, well then I say tough luck. Their parents gave them their religion. You can either follow the rules or not. God also gave them the ability to make their own choices.

And please, I'm speaking only theologically. I am not religious, but I don't care if others are.
