Teen Pregnancy Rates in the USA

ô¿ô

Teen Pregnancy Rates in The United States

by Victor C. Strasburger, MD
University of New Mexico School of Medicine

"The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the western world, despite the fact that our teens are not more sexually active than Swedish teens, or Canadian teens, or British teens.

Why? Because we don't educate about birth control in sex education classes, we don't discuss it at home, we don't give teens good access to it, and we don't advertise it in our media. Other countries do, and they are rewarded with low rates of teen pregnancy and teen abortions. But, you say, making condoms available in school-based clinics would ‘give kids the wrong idea’. In fact, 5 recent research studies indicate that it doesn't.

Educating teenagers about contraception makes them more likely to use contraception when they begin having sex, but it doesn't lower the age at first intercourse.

Why? Probably because the decision where and with whom to become sexually active is a very complicated one, rooted in family, peers, religion, the media, and individual personality factors. But the decision whether to contracept or not is a very simple one: is it available? If so, Ill use it. If not, I’m still going to have sex, but I’m not going to go out of my way to get birth control.

Until Americans get over their hysteria about giving young people access to birth control, we will continue to have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the western world. It's really that simple.

Victor C. Strasburger, MD University of New Mexico School of Medicine

Fact: One million teens in the USA will become pregnant over the next twelve months. Ninety-five percent of those pregnancies are unintended. About one third will end in abortion; one third will end in spontaneous miscarriage; and one third will continue their pregnancy to term and keep their baby.

More than half of them are 17 years old or younger when they have their first pregnancy.

Approximately 40 percent of young women become pregnant before they reach 20 years old.

The United States of America has double the adolescent pregnancy and birth rates of any other industrialized country.

The poorer the young woman, the more likely she will become a mother.

Less than one-third of teens who have babies before the age of 18 finish high school.

Almost half of all teen mothers end up on welfare.

Less than 25 percent of births to teens occur within wedlock.

The birth rate for teens has been declining in recent years"

Not fast enough tho~...and of course add the fact that 5,000 teens will take their first drink today, tomorrow another 5K, the next....

A 2003 CDC Study found that almost half of all unwanted teen pregnancies occured while at least one of the participants was high on alcohol. When drunk a kids inhibitions break down and they have unprotected sex, side note: They also don't consider oral or anal sex as ....sex. I Shit you not...so all that adds to the spreading of STDs.

Can someone connect the dots on this for me...(I figure if you know ME you'll know why I placed this under Religion) Teens narcotic use is an epidemic...oh, yeah, for you fresh meat here...alcohol is a narcotic.

See my starter page...lol

I am out for blood on this....Miller is putting the word "family" in their ads now along with their logo and warm fuzzy invitation to "meet the family" This is as bad as Coors beer working the word "values" into their ads. I get it...get us all addicted to lace your pockets, pay off the politicians...etc etc etc

And John McCain's former drug addict turned Trophy Wife is the ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR-PLUS heiress to a Budweiser Distributorship fortune.

You can't even make up stuff like this.

Do America's teen pregnancy rates include married Holy Rollers, who preach abstinence but satisfy their own urges by gettin' hitched as teenagers?

Or would including those hypocrites send our rates into the Ripley's Believe It Or Not column?

Teen pregnancy. Yeah, deffinately a bit of knowlege and info would be great. But face it. In your mid teens all you want to do is pray to God. All them tv shows, playstations, pc games and math books just pervert kids. We need to encourage them to learn about how Emperor pinguins mate in the Antartic. And how to play Monopoly too.

Hummmmm well, I would include how we allow them to be marketed to and I recall a time (sounding lke a goddmned codger at 50) when teens made their own cultural statements, hippie shit and all that, we made shoes out of old tires, a new pair of jeans wasn't worn until you dragged them around the block a few times, ...on your raked spider bike...the more holes the better, now they have to have $100 dollor shoes at school or..."be cool or be cast out"...now it's the ad people in all medias, shit like American Idol presenting us the "next best thing"...lol...I liked it better when we made out OWN thing ya know.....yadda yadda...

Market this motherfuckers....

Which means more than half were sober and theoretically in control of themselves when they decided to have unprotected sex.
