There is now a free web-based version of Photoshop called Photoshop Express being offered by Adobe on their website. It might provide some photo editing functionality for those of you who don't want to download GIMP and don't feel like shelling out the cash for a full copy of Photoshop. I glanced around the software a bit, and it looks more like Photoshop Elements than a the full Photoshop. I didn't see any sign of layers or any advanced functionality. Still, it's free.

any recommendations - not necessarily freeware or shareware - but affordable, for an good little video production software for a mac rig?

i know NOTHING about these things, so it's going to have to be user friendly - but i'm pretty fluent in photoshop, have done some animation, etc... and i have a deep hankering for producing some videos for youtube all of a sudden.

Was having some real problems last week with an adware program on my laptop. It was Spymaxx, along with a host of other shitty bugs it started. 180solutions, 2020search, etc.

Essentially, it would give a pop-up every minute or so, saying -you're infected with spyware, come buy our shit to remove it - giving a fake spyware program for sale.

This was really a pisser. It disabled taskmanager, and system restore points, hijacked my desktop with an ad, and DL'd all kinds of crap.

..Tried adaware, no good. Tried Spybot, they came back. Spyware doctor...didnt work.

Even trying to back-door my way to retrieve a restore point was fruitless.

Finally, after much aggrivation, I found this. (home trial version)
SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

Ran the quick scan, did the fixes, and got rid of the popups. Then I rebooted, ran it again (full system scan this time), and as of last night I got my PC back.

Whew. - so far so good. I still really am not sure exactly how or where I picked it up, I think it may have been a strange email I opened? not sure.

I find most of my fav freeware on Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done

recently there was a posting of the coolest telescope program called Worldwide Telescope. It's a Microsoft "endeavor" but it really is cool. Better than the new Google Earth.

Office Suites

OpenOffice - OpenOffice is a free office suite released by Sun Microsystems and it is a nice host-based alternative to MS Office.

Thinkfree.com - Thinkfree.com is an online Java based office suite you use through your web browser, including online storage. This makes it simple to access and edit your files from any computer with web access, regardless of platform.

Image Viewers

FastStone Image Viewer - A fast image viewer and management application. It makes thumbnails of your files and stores them in a database, making browsing easy. It also allows you to perform some basic editing tasks, such as cropping and resizing.

Google Picasa - Another image viewing and thumbnailing programme, acquired by Google. I haven't used it much. It doesn't organize your files in a standard directory structure, which is something I had a bit of trouble getting used to, but it seems a pretty solid product. It has a very nice image screen save which zooms in on your pictures, rather than just a standard slideshow. It gives it the feel of a Ken Burns documentary.

Image Editors

The GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Programme. This is really the top solution for free image editing. For all of you looking for some way to resize animated gifs, this is the programme to look for.

GIMPshop - GIMPshop is a modification of GIMP to make it's user interface more like Photoshop. This is a good choice if you're a Photoshop user looking for a free replacement.

Security

Avast Antivirus - ALWIL Software offers Avast Antivirus Home edition free to non-commercial users.

a-squared Free - a-squared Free is a dedicated anti-Trojan scanner from EMSI Software. It's a nice addition to your anti-virus software, as the free edition has no resident scanner that can cause conflicts. I run this in addition to my normal anti-virus scans. a-sqaured HiJackFree is also a handy tool for sniffing out hacking attempts, allowing you to view your processes, network connections, and Autoruns in one place.

Jetico Personal Firewall - The previous version of Jetico Personal Firewall is free. This firewall tends to get the best performance on leak tests, but in order to get the best protection out of it, you need to know what you're doing. For geeks only.

Comodo Personal Firewall - I haven't used this, but I've heard a lot of people say good things about it. I would probably use this over the popular alternative, Zonealarm (which had become very bloated the last time I took it for a spin).

Password Safe - An open source program to allow you to store your passwords in an encrypted database. You can simply double-click on an entry to copy it to your clipboard, then past it into the password field to log in. It also had a handy feature to allow you to automatically generate a random password for any entry, which closes up the big security hole of using the same password for every site. For added security, store your password database on a thumbdrive or other removable drive and so it's not sitting around on your computer when you don't need it.

That's all for now. I'll post more later.
Hi Kana

Mortifying questions:
1. GNU says Windows 2000 & above. That uh, includes XP, right?
2. Would I be able to run an old version of Paint Shop Pro on XP? We're talking pre-2000. I loved that app.

I'll probably have more questions later: it'll be cool to start making actual videos for most favourite songs once I'm done playing Youtube DJ/Salesperson ("listen to this! buy it!" - old ways die hard). That said, last question:
3. They Say PCs can't handle video projects: they're best done by a Mac. Years ago I found They exaggerated, but being out of the field for as long as I have, I'm not so sure anymore. What's your take?

Oh wait, one more -
4. Iolo had a great app called System Mechanic
iolo technologies - The PC Tune-Up Experts

Before I start installing a mother lode of apps, I'd like something to clean up the mess I'll be making. If there's a freeware alternative to System Mechanic, suggestions (from anyone) would be appreciated. Otherwise I may buy it, but it'd be preferable not to. Have to count my pennies these days. Bleh.

Okay, I'll give these a shot.

1. GIMP will run on Windows XP. XP and Windows Server actually replaced the Windows 2000 line. I've run it on XP, so I know it works.

2. I don't know how well an old version of PSP would run on XP, but it probably wouldn't hurt to try if you have a copy laying around.

3. I think the bit about Windows not being able to handle video is just an Apple marketing tactic. It all depends on the software you are using and having the right codecs installed. I use Cyberlink PowerDirector, which is unfortunately not free, with the XviD codec. It uses a good bit of system resources, but it works very smoothly. The K-lite Codec Pack, which I'm not sure if I've mentioned yet, is a nice one-stop solution to handle video and audio encoding and decoding, but you'll still need an editor. I guess Macs come more prepared to do video editing out of the box.

4. I'm not really familiar with system mechanic. It seems to be a bit of Swiss Army Knife, in that it does a lot of system maintenance functions that aren't directly related. You probably won't find one single freeware app that does all that, as freeware generally tends to have a narrower scope. One nice system cleaner I've used is Crap Cleaner (a.k.a. CCleaner). Microsoft also made it's own registry cleaner called RegClean. Some other PC tuning apps are listed here: PC World - Browse System Resources Tune-Up.

I've noticed that System Mechanic also did disk defragmentation. Freeware alternatives, if the Microsoft apps aren't getting the job done, are JKDefrag and Defraggler.
