I am winging it but could this body of water grow a critter that might find us tasty. Exposing the environment would allow an otherwise repressed species to thrive, like mammals thrived as the dinosaurs died off.

That's the exact thing I'd be concerned about. And as long as this isolated/repressed species was not harmful, fine. But if it were, that could be a big issue.

It would probably be the other way around. The surface has been exposed to more competition so these critters may not have much of a chance. Of course they may be primal, something old that we used to have defenses against and no longer do. I defer to Heretic on his explanation's at this level.

It is probably water as sound travels at different speeds in different densities. Unlike our leaders, these people probably know how to tell the difference, they know what they are doing.

Because it is there, someone will try for it. Imagine a huge cavern, it would make a great refuge build a city down there.

Reminds me of Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidar, or the The Hollow Earth - fun stuff....

For scholarly reasons, I find the cavern to be smaller and the center to not be a sun even if as warm

Just reminded me of the book "The Hollow Earth" by Dr. Bernard, which I just pulled off my shelf and of course Burroughs Pellucidar series....
