oh, and BTW, it sounds like you bought someone else's lemon...

i'd try to return it.

i've had a lot of trouble with all the cordless phones i've tried - and have found the one that works best in THIS particular electronic environment is the simplest thing i can get my hands on... a cheap, one line, NO frills vtech that they don't even make anymore. having tried so many with such poor results, i fear the day it craps out.

do you live in a urban area? apartment building?
if so, you may be having trouble with finding a channel that's not already absolutely packed with phones, garage door openers, etc.

look for something with very few bells and whistles.
and then experiment with different channels.

it was only 10 bucks so i am not too worried. i live in a high-rise. i will try flipping the channels
