was it Hawking who said that matter really does escape from a black hole, one particle at a time?

Eventually black holes "evaporate" as X-rays from their poles over time, though it's estimated to take tens of billions of years to do so.

It isn't a pleasure cruise... we don't know how long it will take to develop the necessary technology. Let's not wait until the last minute.

Let's go over a list of technologies:

1. High speeds.

2. Protective shell.

3. Master recycling.

4. General infrastructure.

5. Navigation stuff, telescopes and whatnot.

These are a few things we could safely say we would need. What else could there be, other than the things we cannot currently determine?

6. Better computing power. If you going to go that much further, especially real fast, you need precision and response time.

7. Greater mastery of biology and ecology. An ideal vessel for traversing between stars will need a complete ecosystem [cheaper and simpler than tin can recycling tech] and will pretty much be the swiss army knife of infrastructure for the crew's needs, even potentially protection against radiation [bacteria within a double lining of the hull to convert background radiation and waste products into more biolmass for the onboard ecosystem.

8. Better power production technology. Everything about splaceflight hinges on the energy source. A nuclear pulse detonation is probably the best idea we have to high acceleration ove the short term, and radiodecay ion engines for long term acceleration. Solar sails are limited to in-system flight for their best performance. Yet none of these are adequate for going to the nearest star in any appreciable or practical time frame.

Is that the latest ?
I thought it had something to do with matter and anti-matter around the Schwarzschild radius, as matter was crushed, antimatter particles would go in matter out - Hawking radiation.....

Guess I read/heard wrong....

Maybe said blackhole was the creation of a former civilization that couldn't handle their particle accelerator. It does not seem too likely to me, but read some of the comments in the article below...
