Computer RAM(ming speed) question

im looking to upgrade my RAM the manual for my motherboard says it can support 1 gig (2x512) at a maximum speed of 2700...

okay so the only ram available in town says its can support both 3200 and 2700. (400/333).

I understand that the particular ram in question will operate at 3200 and practically everything beneath 3200 - 400

My compu tech noob question is:

will that ram (3200/2700) work at all on a system that can only support (push?) 2700 at the most...?

I know that the ram can handle the system, but can the system handle the ram?

sheesh why didnt i think of doing that first...

errr sorry man TY, i know you are trying to be helpful, but i did try googling it first....which was how i wound up with partial understanding of how ram works....so i just stopped by my local compu guy and as soon as i mentioned the "speed" capabilities of my mobo...he:

as long as you dont exceed the maximum amount of ddr ram that your mobo can handle (like trying to put 4 gigs of ram into a board that can handle only 1.0) you need not worry about RAM that can handle speeds faster than what your system can push, it will ..."clock" back and operate at whatever speed your system can handle....also dont buy junk ram...recommend Crucial. Also he had none in stock....

Can I ask why the need? Games? Graphics? If it's graphics and such you can also boost your SDRAM with a Ram enhanced video card. Just a thought..

That's not entirely true. The best ram for your mobo is the ram that works best with it. Sounds obvious but it's true. An over speed RAM while it may work by being "clocked back" probably won't perform as well as the RAM the board was designed to use. Plus it costs more.

Unless your planning an upgrade and are going to resue the RAM it's best to buy exactly what it needs. If you can't find it locally just order it online. NewEgg, ZipZoomFly, TigerDirect, to name a few.

Here's a neat little tool provided by Crucial: Memory Upgrade

yes i realise that, at the time , it was the only ram i could find in town i would have bought it...because it was the same price as ordering it online(if not the same brand), but the compu guy actually told me that hes had nothing but problems with kbyte ..

btw crucials memory tool/catalog is incorrect concerning my system, i have looked at mobo manual and it says that 1gb is the maximum amount i may install(2x512)...though crucial recommends as "best choice" that i opt for 2 gb(2xs 1gb)....
