Buying that LCD this weekend.

I was given a dead 21" Gateway LCD, and looked into having it repaired. You may have seen it briefly on my webcam. But I've decided to go new and bigger. It would have only been a stop gap measure anyway.

Buying locally I need it by this weekend (taking an online course and this loaner is terrible for reading).

Local retail choices I've been looking at (copy and pasted from another forum):

Choices:

1.Sceptre 24" W DVI/VGA
2ms 4000:1
300 cd/mē
1920 x 1200 WUXGA

$299.99: Too good to be true?

2.24" Samsung Widescreen LCD Monitor
# 5ms response time
# 1000:1 contrast ratio
# 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
# 400 cd/s3 brightness

$399.87: Good name, love most of their products

3.HannsG 28" Wide
True 1080P with HDMI
3ms
800:1
500 cd/m2

$499.99:
New brand never heard of em, good specs for the money though.

4.ViewSonic 28" W
True 1080P with HDMI
3ms
800:1
500cd/m2

599.99: Another familar name in monitors but I always considered ViewSonic to be the "cheap" version when it came to CRTs, don't know if that still stands for LCD's.

5.Gateway - 24" FHD2400
3 ms response
1000:1
400 cd/mē

$549.99
Seen this monitor my buddy has one very nice, but pricey in comparison. The PIP looks cool but I might not use it.

6.HP Pavilion w2408h
2000:1
400cd/m2
5-millisecond

$499.99: A tad pricey for a 24", but I love HP styling and own one of their plasmas and love it.

7.-Inc iF-281DPB 28"
3ms
Brightness and Contrast Ratio not available?

$539.99: No idea what to think of this thing.

8. LG - 26" W2600H-PF
5 ms
5000:1
300 cd/mē

$599.99: Great name in LCD and Plasma screen construction, new to the market.

9. ViewSonic 28" VX2835wm
800:1
500cd/m2
3ms

$599.99: As before it's VeiwSonic which I've always been wary of, but I suppose they've been around for a while for a reason.

I'll try and check this thread tonight when I get home for any suggestions or warnings.

Thanks people.............

I found this place by accident a few weeks ago...

I spent a lot of money on a new camera, and thankfully I found these guys first.

The outfit I purchased from is one of many from the Brooklyn/Jersey area, with history of poor customer service.

Armed with info I got from the forums at this site, I was able to avoid their hard sell bs, and got a great price on the camera.

I don't think the place was very happy with me, but...oh well.

Good luck.

and the winner is....................

Samsung - 26" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD HD Monitor - 2693HM

the only problem is I lost my motherboard when I went to boot before I hooked it up.

What timing.............

And now I'm having a hell of a time finding a 939 socket MOBO.

Got a few leads locally, nothing online though........

Got a loaner lappy to hold me over for surfing.........

I'll be in and out as time and hardware permits.......

I recently got (on sale is the only reason I could afford it) a 42' HP MediaSmart LCD 1080i/p and LOVE it!

I almost went with a TV, but very few of them can stand up to gaming.

There's only 2 that come with any type of "backing" of the gaming community in general. Both of the them very pricey because of their high performance.

I don't stand for any tearing, ghosting, or inablilty to maintain rock solid and smooth performance. If this Samsung even hiccups or looks bad it's going back in a flash. I'll have to opt for something even higher end.

Truth be known if I could buy a CRT new of the same size I would, and still might opt for a refurbished one.

Namely this: Sony GDM-9000

What a ball breaker.

Found an Albatron board locally but it was dead on installation (no wonder it was still hanging around in the guys shop). Unless I've got something taking out mobos as I hook them up. But I doubt that.

That was one of my last chances. A guy in one of the clans I scrim with has one but he's out of town till Sunday, and he's in Ohio. We'll see how that works out when he gets back.

If anyone can point me towards a reputable dealer for a 939 socket mobo, preferably something in an Nforce chipset w/a PCI-e graphics slot, I would appreciate it.

Such is the life of a gamer, sometimes trouble shoots are easy, sometimes they suck.

I'd upgrade but there really isn't a reason to resort to that yet (yet). Plus I have no use for more power right now, and things only get cheaper if you wait till you really need it.

Well this is getting infuriating.

After finding a second 939 mobo, which is a feat in itself.

It does the exact same thing.

Just as the desktop is about to appear it crashes after a very short BSOD.

Thank god I didn't do an upgrade which would have had me returning about 700.00 worth of hardware.

So now I've got to trouble shoot the HD, VCard, or PSU.

Not to mention the GigaByte mobo I found is sort of flaky. Often times the script is scrambles and there's varied blocks of color.

This is begining to wear on my nerves.

Well everything is sorted out besides a few tweaks.

Board drivers , new video card, reformat, game installation. So what do I think of the Samsung?

No dead pixels. That was good, not a single one.

Performance is very good. Not as smooth as a good CRT but not bad enough to go back to them.

The touch menus are brutal. Hate them. Even after a few days of using them, they're a pain. Either they don't react correctly, or they muffed the timing before one takes over for another.

Very very "touchy". No pun intended.

Auto-detect was flaky now and then. Wouldn't see the DVI connection a few times. So I switched to manual.

Software is OK. MagicRotate is cool but I'll never use it, it's getting uninstalled this weekend. NaturalColor Pro is a nice way to tune the colors, but the Nvidia one is just as good. So that will get ditched soon.

Just shite running the background I don't need.

It looks fabulous. Samsung black piano finish. Small profile, no chrome. Very minimal just how I like things. Stealthy.

So:

Performance: Very Good
Software: Good but useless for me
Looks: Excellent
OSD (on screen display): Terrible maneuvering, auto-detect flaky.
