Which MP3 player?

OK audiophiles you got me in this category.

I have no idea about MP3 players. What I do know is even with XM Radio and a CD player I'm often just flipping around the dial or searching for just the right CD to play in the new Saturn.

But it is MP3 player compatible, via an AUX jack (3mm I think). They didn't pay for the licensing of being completely IPod compatable, so there's that to keep in mind too. Although there's no reason one should not work.

Ok some info:

I will never pay for music in the near future. From what I can tell I can get what I want via a sharing program. I have very little interest in buying the "latest" anything. Video capabilities is right out, for cost reasons and preference. I'm not interested in watching the latest MTV video, or getting the latest NCIS and watching it on a tiny screen.

I use Itunes on my computer....... but I'm willing to use a different client if it means saving money. I configure Itunes manually getting my own artwork, and stuff. The Itunes Store, Podcast and other things are disabled. I like Itunes, but am willing to use RealPlayer, MS, or WinAmp or some other client if better suited for the MP3 Player.

I'm only slightly concerned about personal sound (ear buds/headphones). This will mostly be used in my car. Rarely at work or some other situation, (beach/vacation) where personal sound is used. Essentially I want to be able to take my Itunes collection to my car for the commute home and to work. So a unit with an expensive set of earbuds will probably be a waste.

I don't want to spend a lot of money. I could buy this thing and it could sit in my glove compartment indefinitely. Or I could love it and it could get a work out. I've sort of ruled out IPods because of the additional cost. I know they have the best GUI, but I'm willing to forgo that to save some money.

What do you guys like and use?

What do you think I would like?

I'm not afraid to do things manually, use 3rd party software, or integrate it with my PC manually. Meaning I don't need something that's "automatic". I'd rather do a little finagling and save some money.

It has to be PC compatible, but I'm not a fan of bloated software. I'm a minimalist at heart.

I have an ipod and I love it, but if you want to look elsewhere I had a Sandisc player that worked well and was simple to use and load. I wouldn't buy anything with less than 1G memory even if you don't plan on having alot of music, over time you will find more and more music you want to add.

Capacity isn't really an issue, or so I say now. But I've never had more then 200 songs on my Itunes. So the smallest nowadays should be more then sufficient.

I think 2GBs is fine. If I get a collection that's that large I'll keep it on my PC and just export what I want onto the player.

Essentially I'm returning a 150GB Western Digital Raptor HD used for a troubleshoot for $200.00. Possibly minus a restocking fee. So that's my budget. That would mean it has to be at BestBuy too so there's that to consider. Of which they have a decent selection so it's not an issue.

I would say the sandisk 8gb player with color display for 149.99 would fit your criteria nicely.

I bought an MPMAN somewhere around 1998-99. I haven't bought a new one yet. I've considered from time to time.

You see, I lost the pc hook up stuff a couple of years ago or so. I like the music I have on it though...so it's okay.

It has a radio. It came in handy during the 2004 Hurricane season. We were without power for three days after Hurricane Jeanne or Francis...who ever the heck that was...

The radio works great. The gadget works on one AA battery.

I could get a new one at some point...but like you...I haven't a clue.

This little guy has served me well and it's nothing fancy or outrageously expensive.

I bought it at a Canadian store on the internet that dealt in only MP3's and such.

I'd be curious to know what you decide to go with and how easy it is to use. Easy is good. Anything less than easy might end up bouncing off walls. Sturdy...sturdy is good too.

I could stick with mine for who knows how long...I have Mellancamp, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, Jimmy Cliff and Ode to Joy on it...What more can you ask for?

Bottom line: you can be happy without expensive.

Well I put the kibosh on the MP3 player.

BestBuy gave me cash back so I couldn't justify the purchase.

Even though it's my Birthday today.

The Saturn has a CD player, AM/FM, and XM. My truck had only AM/FM. So I've got more then I've had in a while.

I can live with it for now. I may grab it if my commute begins to get tiresome. I'm going to do some burning to get some of my Itunes on CD so it's not a total loss of the idea.

I did pick up a copy of a game I've been interested in trying since I read about it.

Portal

It goes against the philosphy in my signature, but every rule was meant to be broken. I've only done a few offline things over the years (Grand Theft, and some Flight Simulations). If it's a "game" it has to be very non-linear, or if it's a simulation it has to be incredibly tedious.

I lose interest when I feel I've been jumping through hoops for some programmer.

Portal is different (so far), it's not how many shots you can fire , or sword swings, or spells you can cast to get out of trouble. It's how well you can think through a problem or situation.

Plus it looks insane at 1920x1200 on my new monitor and Vcard.

I have a Sony MP3 player. It was only $100 on sale. Good quality but the earbuds were cheap and broke the minute they bounced off each other. I had to replase them, but did with another cheap pair but they haven't broke just because they bounce off each other.
