    Anti McCain bias

What do you guys think of this? I know that most of you are Obama supporters, and this is GOOD news to you. But isn't it screwy that the MSM may have a hand in who becomes the leader of the free world?

Study Shows McCain Media Coverage Mostly Negative
The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report shows John McCain's media coverage has been 57 percent negative, while Barack Obama's has been 29 percent negative.

    AP

    Wednesday, October 22, 2008

NEW YORK -- John McCain may long for the days when Barack Obama got the lion's share of the media attention: Coverage of the Republican candidate has been overwhelmingly negative since the conventions ended, a study released Wednesday found.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report illustrates how the media echo chamber can send things spiraling out of control for a candidate. It's likely to give ammunition to people who say the press has been biased against McCain, but the organization said its findings on this were inconclusive.

"It's quite possible for there to be elements of enthusiasm for one candidate or another," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Washington-based think tank. "That's a failure of professionalism if it's there. But this report can't suss it out."

McCain and Obama have received an equal amount of media attention since the conventions.

The project judged 57 percent of the stories about McCain as negative, with 14 percent positive. The rest were neutral.

Obama's coverage was mixed: 36 percent positive, 29 percent negative, 35 percent neutral, the study found.

"I guess it's inevitable, but it does reflect the relentless degree to which winning begets winning," Rosenstiel said. "The polls are so ubiquitous that it is difficult for them not to be the picture frame through which the press views everything."

McCain's poll numbers have been sinking. As a result, many of the stories about him are about why his poll numbers are sinking -- and how whatever he says or does is an attempt to stop his poll numbers from sinking, he said.

The economic crisis, and McCain's response to it, also played poorly for him in the press. His attempt to deflect attention with attacks on Obama and his ties to 1960s radical William Ayers did even worse, the study found. During this time, news organizations also did critical fact-checks on some McCain ads, including one on Obama and sex education.

Changes in the media have also heightened the sense of piling on, Rosenstiel said. There are more polls to report on, hence more stories to say McCain is doing poorly in them. The 24-hour news networks are paying a great deal of attention to the campaign because it gets ratings, making for more repeating of stories done elsewhere, he said.

The cable networks have been showing off new iPhone-like technology that allows them to pull up maps of the country and data, and the electoral maps haven't been good for McCain.

Financial cutbacks also mean less time for news organizations to do enterprise reporting, again making for more repetition.

Rosenstiel noted that Obama's coverage was negative during the week after the GOP convention, when the surging McCain had the Democrat on his heels and talking about lipstick and pigs. McCain's negative coverage closely tracks the tone of Democrat Al Gore's during the 2000 campaign, he said.

A similar thing happened during the latter stages of Hillary Clinton's campaign against Obama, said David Gregory, host of MSNBC's "Race to the White House."

"There's a lot of focus on the campaign that is in decline to explain why that is happening, and then it becomes in the eye of the beholder whether that is fair or unfair treatment," Gregory said. "The best we can do is challenge both sides substantively."

The McCain campaign did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Sarah Palin has received three times the press attention as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, Joe Biden, the study found. Her stories were judged 39 percent negative, 33 percent mixed and 28 percent positive.

Palin's coverage started out positive but turned when reporters went to Alaska to check on her record as governor. The study found only 5 percent of the stories were about Palin's family, most of them in the days after it was revealed her daughter was pregnant.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism studied some 2,412 stories from 48 news outlets for its study, including newspapers, Web sites and broadcast and cable news. A smaller sample, 857 stories, was used to judge the tone of the coverage.

    What's to say?

In the news that I watch even the Republicans are ripping on McCain...

He's made a lot of boneheaded decisions. Should the press make sure that equal time is spent portraying negative aspects about the candidates to be fair even if that means replaying fewer negatives about one candidate more to compensate for the numerous negatives of another?

For instance I'll give you a hypothetical...Let's say that Obama makes 2 dumb decisions and McCain makes 10 and there will be 100 units of media coverage devoted to the candidates. Should the media give 50 units of coverage to the 2 mistakes by Obama and 50 units of coverage to the 10 mistakes by McCain? Would that be fair? Or would it be fair to give approx 17 units of coverage to the Obama mistakes and approx 83 units to McCain's, where each negative is given equal time even though it favors one candidate over the other?

No one will be able to convince me that the MSM has been slanted in any way toward Obama until the MSM starts covering Todd Palin's
membership in the AIP all day every day.

This woman is out there day in and day out chanting "America First" and anointing herself as the arbiter of who of us are good Americans
and who are not -- while there are YouTubes out there of her effusive praise for a wingnut organization that wants Alaska to secede from the United States. And Todd Palin's membership in AIP
is undisputed. I would like to see a report on
how many times the MSM had used the phrase
Bill Ayers and how many times AIP
has even been mentioned. (And Bill Maher is not
    MSM.)
In the Couric interview (I think), Palin announced that if one of her daughters became pregnant after being raped that she would choose life. Good for Katie Couric. But has cable news, which
is certainly part of the mainstream media, had panels on all day every day discussing her draconian stand on reproductive rights?
I would rate this as a top five Need to Know topic as we face the appointment by the 44th president of as many as three Supreme Court Justices.

Joe Biden made the same gaffe at two private
fundraisers and it has been discussed ad nausem since yesterday.

What about Obama do you think the MSM is not
    covering?

Anti-McCain bias? You're not trying to be funny are you? Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow aside, the rest of the network seems to keep throwing McCain life preservers. When Obama and McCain serrogates go on together for a panel discussion, the right wingers get easily twice the speaking time and they allowed to interrupt Obama's people without anyone from the network putting a stop to the rudeness.

Besides, what with CNN becoming Wry FOX-lite it would be nice to have a pro-Obama network [which we don't as of yet].

The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report shows John McCain's media coverage has been 57 percent negative, while Barack Obama's has been 29 percent negative.
Now the reason for that is because McCain's campaign is ALL about negativity. It's to the point you have McCain/Palin supporters yelling death threats about Obama at the rallies.

It's the under reporting of John McCain that is the problem. The negative coverage are because McCain is running a disgusting campaign. His entire campaign is negative and the country doesn't like it. Obama has been vetted by the press to a ridiculous degree. Despite treating him differently because he was a black candidate...the people of this country knew better and are going to elect him.

McCain and Palin have received a pass. No one talks about his affair, his rape jokes, his famous temper...the fact that he betrayed the POW families. Sara Palin's husband wants to withdraw Alaska from the United States...NO COVERAGE

There is a larger study that showed Obama received more negative press than ANYONE through August. That study was conducted by republicans.

Get real, the MSM and people in general treat McCain with kid gloves because he is a military vet and was a POW and he has milked that for everthing it is worth. Each and every single time they have cornered him with a legitimate point he has thrown the "I was a POW" get out of jail free card out there and they have been letting him get away with it. The only ones that call him out on it is shows such as "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "Real Time with Bill Maher", but then neither of them have ever claimed to be "the News". I'm not sure what has happened to the MSM in this country but they really have lost thier way I'm not sure they are looking to get back on the path. We have seen it with reporters like Judith Miller from the New York Times incestuous relationship with the the Bush Administration. She was allowed access to them because she was willing to parrot thier administration's talking points. The Bush Administration was able to get away without any serious questioning during the lead-up to the Iraq war because supposedly objective journalists were repeating exactly what the Administration was putting out there for them. We found out later that it was a big fat lie that was fed to a lazy reporter who liked the feeling of importance she got from hanging out with people in the White House. I'm not sure what scares me more, lobbyist buying influence with Congress and the President or the White House manipulating the media. Nah, it isn't a contest, political manipulation of the news media is orders of magnitude scarier.

No reputable news organization would take her, anyone who still thinks Fox is "Fair and Balanced" will have to rationalize this as well, but I guess if they eat up all the crap Fox feeds them, this last little turd isn't gonna bother them all that much.

All McCain's "ticket" has, are gross misrepresentations, and all out lies.

They plant "Joe" the plumber, like a lowlife hunter plants a bait pile in the woods.

Then, they just keep returning to that pile of "Joe", and they shoot with both barrels.

It doesn't matter that Obama took the time to talk to the wifebeater...and ultimately foil their plan. He proved that the "Joe the Plumbers" out there have no reason for concern.

Still, they take three words from a 5 minute conversation, (didn't they do something similar w/Rev. Wright?) and repeat "Spread the wealth" ad nauseum, until they've convinced the masses that we're doomed.

Meanwhile, Obama laughs off every snyde remark, or blatant lie that he's asked to respond to. The ads are always one step ahead of the tired old Rove rhetoric.

It may appear that more of the negative attention is given to McCain. That's because it's all negative when you see their faces on t.v.. They've got nothing of substance.
Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got til it's gone
