Study: Iraq had no link to al-Qaida

    Title
Study: Iraq had no link to al-Qaida

    Link
Captured papers confirm Iraq had no link to al-Qaida | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Excerpt

President Bush and his aides used Saddam's alleged relationship with al-Qaida, along with Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction, as arguments for invading Iraq after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claimed in September 2002 that the United States had "bulletproof" evidence of cooperation between the radical Islamist terror group and Saddam's secular dictatorship.

Then-Secretary of State Colin Powell cited multiple linkages between Saddam and al-Qaida in a watershed February 2003 speech to the United Nations Security Council to build international support for the invasion.

Almost every one of the examples Powell cited turned out to be based on bogus or misinterpreted intelligence.

As recently as last July, Bush tried to tie al-Qaida to the ongoing violence in Iraq.

"The same people that attacked us on September the 11th is a crowd that is now bombing people, killing innocent men, women and children, many of whom are Muslims," the president said.

The new study, titled "Saddam and Terrorism: Emerging Insights from Captured Iraqi Documents," was essentially completed last year and has been undergoing what one U.S. intelligence official described as a "painful" declassification review.

    Comment:

I didn't see a thread on this here, but I thought it deserved one. Anyone who was paying attention knew all this back in 2001, but here the Pentagon is acknowledging it.

Ah, yes. This statement from October 10, 2002 (emphasis added):

In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001.

It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security.

Now this much is undisputed. The open questions are: what should we do about it? How, when, and with whom?
Unfortunately for Hillary, her claims were disputed, even then, by people in the know.

Top Ranking CIA Operatives Admit Al-qaeda Is a Complete Fabrication

BBC’s killer documentary called “The Power of Nightmares“. Top CIA officials openly admit, Al-qaeda is a total and complete fabrication, never having existed at any time. The Bush administration needed a reason that complied with the Laws so they could go after “the bad guy of their choice” namely laws that had been set in place to protect us from mobs and “criminal organizations” such as the Mafia. They paid Jamal al Fadl, hundred’s of thousands of dollars to back the U.S. Governments story of Al-qaeda a “group” or criminal organization they could “legally” go after. This video documentary is off the hook…

FOX NEWS Interview with Ian Blair (LINK):Blair said, “Al Qaeda is not an organization. Al Qaeda is a way of working … but this has the hallmark of that approach.”

The Pentagon-sponsored study, scheduled for release later this week, did confirm that Saddam's regime provided some support to other terrorist groups, particularly in the Middle East, U.S. officials told McClatchy Newspapers. However, his security services were directed primarily against Iraqi exiles, Shiite Muslims, Kurds and others he considered enemies of his regime.

The new study of the Iraqi regime's archives found no documents indicating a "direct operational link" between Hussein's Iraq and al-Qaida before the invasion, according to a U.S. official familiar with the report.

I guess you have a problem with the written word. The report was inconclusive - finding no evidence doesn't mean there isn't any. By your own definition, goverments DO hide evidence - you accuse THIS government of doing so (lying and manipulating), why is it so hard to believe that others do as well?

So now you're saying you disagree with the report's findings? That Saddam's government DID destroy documents regarding an Iraq/Al Qaeda link?
