The video isn't available so I'd have to see his swing for myself.

Best ever? Not even in the same galaxy as Gehrig or Williams. Not yet anyway.

Statistically he's already behind Williams .

First two Seasons (with Teddy BallGame playing only 46 more games)

RBI's
Ted Williams 258
Josh Hamilton 177

Runs
Ted Williams 265
Josh Hamilton 159

Batting Average
Ted Williams .335
Josh Hamilton .300

Hits
Ted Williams 378
Josh Hamilton 277

Home Runs (the kid has power)
Ted Williams 54
Josh Hamilton 51

Doubles
Ted Williams 87
Josh Hamilton 52

Triples
Ted Williams 25
Josh Hamilton 7

Strike Outs (he did do one thing more then the Splendid Splinter)
Josh Hamilton 191
Ted Williams 118

Ted Williams went on to hit .406 his 3rd season, the last person to ever even break .400 (67 years ago). And went on for the next 16 season only batting below .300 once (.254 in 1959). 4 of the next 16 seasons he batted better then that first two season average of .335. One of them at .388 (1957).

You post up here when Josh starts putting up those kinds of numbers and I'll eat a bug.

YouTube - Ted Williams hitting

His eyesight was beyond perfect. So good he became a fighter pilot trainer during WWII, and a combat pilot during the Korean War. Williams won the triple crown twice (one of only two players to do so) and came 2/1000th away from winning it a unprecedented third time. He also has the highest career average of any player hitting over 500 home runs.

Their stats are crunched by SeamHeads over and over, if it's not one it's the other.

I give Ted the nod since his approach to the game is still being used.

We can get into a stat war, but it's so close it's hard to call.
All due respect to Ted Williams (the only Red Sox player I'll ever show any respect to) the lack of championship rings hurts his claim on best player ever, he is a lock for best player of any sport to never win a championship. But you're right that this is too close to call, and we haven't even mentioned Willy Mays or Stan Musial or Roberto Clemente, etc. One stat worth mentioning before I go Gehrig's career fielding percentage: .991

I was sort of focusing on on the fact you mentioned "hitting" since it seems to be Josh Hamilton's forte.

The Gehrig/Williams hitting debate is one for the historians and such a contest of Titans it's based on mirco stats and opinion . All around Gehrig is better, since he was so close to Williams, such a great fielder, and a "winner". He was part of many winning teams.

What about Yaz, he was a great player....... Fred Lynne? Come now, I hate the Yankees but A-Rod is a monster (in the regular season ).

Anywhoo........

I do the same thing you do when some one starts saying "greatest". I was even a Tiger doubter till he started piling up the wins in majors.

Hey I'd love to see it my life time, but to anoint anyone before even coming close to these historical figures is ludicrous.

No offense Anhailla

You're right, ya gotta like Yaz, and I do respect Fisk, Lynne, and Dom DiMaggio (of course I respect Joltin' Joe's little bro). You are also correct in calling Williams the Greatest Hitter, because that is a title he can claim with lot of support.

I will not "take it easy". In my entire life, I have never had a man make fun of my knowledge of baseball, I don't mean statistics that people just remember...I mean knowing the game and the mechanics of the game.

lol...I actually appreciate (sincerely) you posting those, gives an idea of where he is at, thank you...
He didn't play seriously for 4 years because of his addiction, the idea is that his illness could have prevented him from being even better.

furthermore, those are batting stats, which are of huge importance, I understand...but we also are talking about all around.

People play with him talk about him being capable of being the best, it's a more of a question of could he be...not that he is

I was upset because someone poked fun of my ability to know a great swing, that's offensive. Sure I expected people to disagree, no big deal.
