what is wrong with the NHL?
George Gillette, owner of the Montreal Canadiens wanted to fly the players families to Tampa to be with them over the holidays. The league stepped in and said that if he does, it will count against the salary cap. i just saw a legal guy try to figure it out and his best guess was the trips would be a taxable benefit to the players. but Gillette is not flying the players anywhere; he is flying their families. why the hell does Bettmann have to stick his ass in everything?

certainly the players can afford to bring their families down, but why can't the boss give them a Christmas present?

What is wrong with Bettman is a better question.
He should be promoting this type of thing. God forbid it puts pressure on other owners to make the same gesture of unity amongst their players and families. And just how would you count it against the cap? Add up the airfares and accommodations? I suppose if the Hab's owner had offered this type of thing as a benefit for all signing with the team, the cost could be seen that way. But this is "after the fact", and I'm sure it's not mandatory that a player has to provide a family member for transport to Tampa. Either way, it's just stupid to make an issue out of something like this. |

a good point. it wasn't a signing bonus, it was just a spontaneous thoughtful gesture to allow the families to be together over the holidays.

i think Bettman is apathetic. he doesnt seem to care that Carolina and Florida are not hockey markets. he refuses to look at expansion in Canada, even with a strong dollar. he just keeps beating a dead horse
