Snowboarders

This is my other rant for the week. I ski fairly often , at least once a week. I get off the lift, place my poles on, and proceed to ski my ass off. I'm not great, but enjoy ice, bumps, powder and steeps. I get slammed in to a couple of times a season, and it has always been by an out of control boarder, always. Last week I got a 3 inch gash thanks to a boarder coming down a black ,and slammed in to me from the side, out of control, which I got sewed up,
I'm always amazed at how many boarders sit in groups, not riding , often in the middle of the piste (very uncool, and against the skier's code). The percentage of boarders I see who ride in control and carve an edge rather than sliding down the mountain is small, very small. I don't see much fun in that.
My question is this: is this just a local thing at Alyeska, where I ski, or do others experience the same?

i went skiing yesterday at sunshine (banff) with 2 snowboarders and 2 skiers. one snowboarder is just learning. mostly he skied strawberry which is a green run that is perfect for learning with many snowboarders on it.

other then the learners sliding down the green run ~ i saw a lot of very good boarders cutting it up but it could be because it was celebrity weekend at sunshine or it could be that it is a world class ski place.

however i do agree with you that snowboarders are usually the problem off accidents waiting to happen. usually thinking they are better then they actually are and on runs they have no business being on. and there were many at sunshine but omg did i see a lot of really good ones as well.

That happens alot here in NY. Many snowboarders here don't care who they run into. They just play it off like nothing occured. But again, they are the ones with higher injury rates and complaints, well at least here. I lost count of how many times snowboarders have been whisked away by the ski patrol, on the stretcher, for trying things they knew they couldn't do. Broken backs and legs seem to be the most popular. They also are the ones that got many of the trails closed for a bit, due to recklessness. Don't get me wrong, there are some great riders, but they are far and few between.

there was a fair amount of powder ~ think it was about -10c (14 f) for most of the day. it got a little cold around closing time tho and goatseye was pretty much a white out but the other runs were fine.

we rented 2 gps tracking devices. it maps out your runs and your top speed. we did 3 black, 5 blue and 5 green and top speed was 47 km/hour (close to 30 mph)

i probably only skied 1 black 5 blues and many greens (i was hanging mostly with the guy learning to board because i have a knee injury but i did okay but the moguls really hurt)

fucking good times tho. think all the skating i've been doing helped cause my knee isn't killing me today and i was worried i wouldn't be able to ski at all.
