Castillo screwed up a shallow fly ball in the 9th. It was Church's ball. It cost Maine the complete game shutout.

Look who's talking! That September swoon was copyrighted by the Phillies, did the Mets pay any royalties for it last year? If not, they should.

I'm not sure Church would have gotten there, I'd have to watch the replay.

Homestand

Mets return home, aim to impress fans
New York (17-15) vs. Cincinnati (14-21), Friday, 7:10 p.m. ET
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com

LOS ANGELES -- Given how readily Mets fans have booed their team during their first two homestands of the season, these players know precisely what to expect when they return home on Friday night. That doesn't mean they're thrilled with the idea of it -- only that they've come to accept it.

"When we start to play well, then you'll see a change," manager Willie Randolph said. "For me, as far as my players, we don't talk about it. We don't concern ourselves with it. Guys are trying to win ballgames, and that's really where their heart and soul is."

The Mets will play in front of their home crowd on Friday night for the first of seven games back at Shea, with one series each against the Reds and Nationals. Considering the team's recent bumpy road trip through Arizona and Los Angeles, their home fans aren't likely to be any more forgiving than they were in previous games at Shea, when Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes, among others, drew boos.

Randolph, for one, believes it all still stems from last year, when the Mets lost a seemingly insurmountable division lead down the stretch to miss the playoffs.

"Obviously, the fans are having a tough time moving past that, so we just hope that they eventually get behind this team," Randolph said. "I think we're going to make them real proud before the year is over."

They can start on Friday, as the Mets attempt to win consecutive games for the first time since their last homestand. Mike Pelfrey, loser of two straight games, will aim to cure his own recent struggles against a young but talented Reds offense.

He'll face right-hander Matt Belisle in Friday night's series opener, and if he wins it, maybe -- just maybe -- the Mets can find something of a friendlier reception at Shea.

"Believe me, my team is really solid and together as far as how we look at ourselves," Randolph said. "I don't think that we define how we are by the reaction that we get."

Tidbits
Pedro Martinez (strained left hamstring) could face live hitting for the first time when he's due for another side session on Friday, pending how he feels. ... Reliever Matt Wise (right forearm contusion) pitched one inning in extended Spring Training on Wednesday, allowing one unearned run. He could rejoin the Mets as soon as Friday. ... Of the 50 at-bats the current Mets have amassed against Belisle, only Carlos Beltran, with a home run, has recorded an extra-base hit. ... John Maine turns 27 years old on Thursday. ... Moises Alou on Tuesday became the first over-40 player to steal home plate since Paul Molitor did it for the Twins in 1998. Molitor was one month younger than Alou is now.
